Alabama-minimum residency for handgun purchase?

Lemme try this in the revolver forum:

So I finally made the move from Maryland to Birmingham, and was messing around in Academy Sports when I almost fell over - a S&W 642 for only $349 (in Maryland it would be $500+).

But, sadly, I couldn't buy it if I wanted to as the salesman said that Alabama has a 90 day residency requirement to buy handguns ( I did get my Alabama DL Wednesday).

Now, I had heard that Jefferson County has a 6 month residency requirement for CCW, but I hadn't heard of this 90 day deal, nor can I find it in Alabama gun regs online. Its certainly plausible, and the salesman seemed very sure, but I wonder if anyone can confirm this.

On the good side, I am going out to Pleasant Grove tommorrow to join the FOP Range.

I am LOVING Alabama so far, even if I have to wait 90 days to buy a handgun for half what theu cost in MD!
 
I've never heard of those residency requirements, and I've lived here for a while. Go visit www.scssa.org for my club's website. Great facility, y'oughta join up. Turns out I'll be relocating to NW Arkansas in June. Sigh....

Yup I did get my AL driver's license first thing when I got here, and it does have my address on there.

Now that sounds like a deal, I can't believe how much less firearms are in general here!

residency

The Federal gun control act of 1968 imposed a six month state residency requirement. I don't know if this is still in effect or got rescinded somewhere along the way.

Welcome to Alabama! I've been here since 1978, and i've never wanted to leave!

As far as residency requirements, I just checked the online Code of Alabama as well as my ATF(E) State Laws and Ordinances, and I don't see anything related to a 90 day residency requirement to purchase firearms in Alabama.

Its been a while since I filled out a 4473, but I don't remember anything on there about being a resident of the state for longer than xx months.

Musta been some sort of store policy - plus, though perfectly valid, maybe the laser printer temporary DLs given out here spook people.

I can't find any mention of it either but obviously they'll not get my business!

I for one heartily recommend going to see Mr. Ala Dan at Simmons Sporting Goods in Bessemer!
