All purpose carbine?

DC300, it really depends on WHAT you buy. A box of Honady XTP's will run you about $24, a white box of Winchester FMJ's will run you about $12.

but remember, 44 magnum is a pistol cartridge, and comes in boxes of 50, not 20 like rifles.

So if you are payin 18 bucks for 20 rifle cartridges, or 24 for 50 pistol.....

get me?

A .357 magnum Marlin is a very versatile in between rifle. I'd love to have one.
The only problem you'll have with one is keeping ammo around for it!

BTW - I love the .30-30 but if you already have the 30'06 and are looking for something to really fill the gap, why "double up" with another practically full powered round?

AR 223 bad idea cant hunt anything with it legally but vermin and coyotes AR 10 Maybe I love my AK underfolder easy to pack Marlin 336 GREAT one anything 44 MAG THE choices are endless Go bigger than 223/5.56 though

Rem 7600 in .270, because the Lever action in 44mag has already been mentioned.

Yugoslavian SKS carbine. Tried&true design, toughest of the SKS's, cheap plentiful round, quick reload w/hard permanent magazine. Fantastic beater guaranteed to take it.

I don't own one of these, but have you thought about something in .35 rem? If you reload it might be nice, you can use .357/.38spec handgun bullets and make some tamer loads to handle smaller game. More powerful stuff would probably be closer to your 06' than your .357. Again not experienced in this, but been thinking about it... seems like you could make loads to suit your "all purpose" criteria. I have a .357 revolver, and haven't got into reloading yet. Even if I do Id be looking for something in 30/30, .35 rem, or 45/70 lever gun (think 336.) It wouldn't be 100% compatibility, but it seems like if you were trying to pair something together it would go better with your revolvers than your other lever gun options if you reloaded. Maybe, just some of my thoughts on that... lots of people talking about ARs, there are a lot of good options out there. Hope you find something that fits your needs well! Happy hunting.

The .35 Rem. Is a great choice. A couple of thoughts though:
Better ammo/component availability for the .357
Higher capacity in the .357
Lower cost ammo components in .357
Both are great deer guns neither is a great choice for anything larger.
.357 would mean no new cartridge to buy, no new dies etc, if he reloads
All in all, I'm not sure the advantages of the 35 Rem outweigh the advantages of the 357, in this particular case.

Get the .357 lever,.
You won't be happy till you do and if you're not happy someone will happily buy it from you in short order.

I'd go with the marlin in .357. I like the option of having a sidearm and rifle the same caliber. I've been eyeing one in 44 mag

Personally, I like the idea of a .357 lever-action. I've been wanting to get one myself for some time. They are light weight, slender, versatile (.38/.357).

I have a Marlin .44 mag and it's fun, but has never been real accurate, 3"+ at 50 yards. Maybe I just got a lemon.

That's for sure! I've been watching 1894C auctions on Gunbroker, and they've been selling for MSRP or more used or new.

Exactly, the reason I recommend it is I love mine and I don't even reload. I have had a spotless 1977 version for about a year. I run out of the box 38spcl to 357 Hornady leverevolution and it does not hiccup. I paired it up with a 4 5/8 Blackhawk and it's enough fun to be illegal. There's something to be said about going a little slower once in a while.
The prices are outrageous and I paid more than new msrp for one that's over 30 years old but this one I'm just not selling.

Good luck!

Wow, gone for about 8 hrs (have to work to buy guns) I didn't expect so many responses.
Ok let's see:
No I don't reload...yet... soon hopefully
I'm really not looking to buy an AR type rifle I would rather something with wood
I know a .30-30 fits but not what really what I'm looking for
I'll probably end up getting both but which one do I get first?
I'm looking for something out to about 100 yards +-
Something that will kill up to a deer in a worse case scenario (I know a .22lr will but I want a little more umph).

I know this sounds crazy but I've always been like this. I want something I can grab and run out of the house and be able to "survive". I know that is kind of vague and I hope nothing like that ever happens but "Be Prepared" as the Boy Scouts say.
...Oh yeah, and something for the occasional Zombie.

Depending on the action the OP is partial to; I think a 30-30 lever or a REM model 7 in .260 or 7mm-08 would fill the bill nicely.

Personally I like my WIN model 94 30-30 trapper w/ XS sights as my tweener/all purpose/woods walkin gun.

Get the .357 1894C. The .357 mag rounds gains a lot of credibility as a deer round when shot out of a carbine. Sure it's no .30-.30, but its close enough. I love mine. I have a AR too but "I" don't even come close to considering that a woods gun. I load a cast 358156 gas checked 168 gr SWC, hot, that feed fine and shoots like champ, 158 gr rnfp in .38 sp brass, and it even feeds full wadcutter .38 specials. From rabbits, small pigs and deer inside 75 yds, that the neatest little rifle I own. Way more versatile that the 30-30 (which i love too) or any of the other big bore rifles mentioned above. A pocket full of .38's and a box of full house .357's will keep you happy for a while. As for the zombie, crowd control factor, a hot 125grain JHP .357 mag load is no joke. Look up Mike Venturino's article about his .32-20 lever exploits at a black rifle carbine, Jeff Cooper course. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

The round is no joke, no doubt. The reason I went for the Mini 14 for those hypothetical situations was magazine capacity and reload times.

Also, I've been looking for that article and can't seem to find it.

CZ 527 in 7.62 x 39 is a Survival Rifle

This is just what you are looking for:

cz527.jpg

Notice it is a carbine and in a big game capable cartridge: 7.62 x 39 (the little Russian). You can put 20 rounds in one pocket and not even fill them there. Iron sights are standard. As picture it weights 7.5 lbs (magazine is empty). Without sling and scope it is 6 3/4 pounds.

If you load 32 caliber pistol bullets with Alliants's Steel powder you have a small game rifle.

The scope is a Burris Timberline 2x-7x. The rings are CZ's; they came with the rifle.

I can hit a GI Jerry Can repeatedly at 415 yards with the following load:

Hornandy 150 gr sp 303 cal (.312")
IMR SR 4759 1.6 cc (Lee Percision's powder scoop) or about 16.1 grains
WLR Primer
Crimp in canular
100 yard group .33" (bullets overlapping)
