Would anyone happen to have a picture of Alliant American Select powder? Just curious how it compares size wise to HP-38/W231. Thank you.

I have two Lee Auto Drum Powder measures set up in my Lee turrets for 9mm and 45 ACP. One of them leaks HP-38 so was just looking for a decent powder a little bigger than that and a local shop has American Select in stock.

I like am select & use a lot of it. It really shines with it's case capacity per small weight loads.

Another source for getting an idea of how big/small the gunpowder flakes are it to look at the lee dipper chart.

A .3cc dipper of ww231 ='s 3.2gr
A .3cc dipper of am select ='s 2.2gr

Same volume/size dipper but am select is has 31% less weight or is 31% larger

I haven't thought of that but it makes perfect sense, thank you!

Very similar to Red Dot or 700X, with large fluffy flakes for excellent case fill in the big boys. With many, many different loads in 44 mag and 45 Colt, I found American Select to be just slightly slower and more accurate that the other two. Excellent powder.

I've been using American Select lately. I like that it's lower in density than many of the spherical and finer grained powders, and therefore yields greater case fill for light loads in the large capacity cases.

You're confusing size with mass.

Which is larger? A pound of feathers or a pound of lead?

There is nothing wrong with Forrest R’s explanation. If two powders have the same VOLUME and one weighs less... then obviously the one weighing less is less dense and will take up more room in the case.

Looked at the Alliant site. There is not much data for American Select. None for my .41 Mag. I would like the case fill but think I will stick with Trail Boss for that use now. I do not see that American Select is at all close to HP38 in usage? Basically all I saw for Ameircan Select was some cowboy action loads.

That should be fine, though the maximum velocities will be a little less than what can be achieved with some of the slower powders. Case fill will be good with the 45 Auto, and the 9mm will be even higher. If using a progressive, you might get some powder splash with the 9.

I use a Lee Classic Turret with the auto indexing disabled. I don’t like doing full strokes to get it to rotate. Quicker just to turn it by hand.

That’s exactly why I rotate by hand. I hate doing a full stroke like that not to mention your hang ups.

I make 200 quality rounds in an hour my method. No moments of confusion, no back tracking, no double charges, no squibs. lol I’m perfectly happy with that.
