Is Reloder 7 an adequate powder for .308Win loads? Thinking specifically about 150 gr FMJ and 165 gr cast... Seems to be very little recipes around for Reloder 7/.308 combination, just wondering if there are issues I should know about...

*crickets*

Any opinions or comments welcome :)

How about general views on the powder itself?

Haven't used it myself.
Burn rate is fast for a 308.
It'll work with the 150 gr bullet, but velocity won't be as high as with some slower powders.
Might be just right for cast lead.

I have loaded a 130gr. Speer HP with 40gr of RL7. About 2880fps. Accuracy was OK with my Savage 11 which is normally a tack driver. RL12 is a better choice,IMHO.

I used RL7 in 223 long ago and it is kinda on the fast side for 223, although it performed OK for me. I would think it would be too fast for 308, period. But I don't have access to my manuals at the moment.

Yeah I know, better powders out there for .308, BUT....the place where I am living has very bad supply issues regarding anything 'for shooting'. Basically, you get to pay premium prices for regular stuff, if you are lucky enough to find some. It sucks. I did already buy a good powder designed for .308 Win, but they only had a pound worth and was then offered this R7 as well. I said I would think about it.

R7 is listed for 308, 150 gr, in several of my old manuals, with velocities up to 2700 fps. It was Hercules Reloader 7 then.
You could call Alliant see what they say.

I found it (Reloader7) listed in the Sierra 5th with thier under 170gr spitzers. Then I spent some time in the section marked "reloading for gas guns" and learned enough there that I would never use it in my M&P10.
I suspect that it'll stay on the shelf until I have some time to experiment with some 125gr. 30-30? loads maybe.
From what I could gather in that manual, it could work OK with .223 AR, but I'd look find someone who has already tried some before I loading it for my carbine.

I use Reloader 7 for 30-30. Works great. I've done 125, 150 and 170gr bullets for the Model 94 and they all shoot great.

I use Reloader 17 for 300 Win Mag.

RL-7 works great in my 308, 30-30, 8mm Mauser, with cast bullets.
With Jacketed I would suspect it would work best with lighter bullets. 125gr range or so.

Havent tried it. I found it to be my go too powder for 300 Black out cast loads. So unless I have no other option, not using RL-7 for any thing else.

The trouble with fast powder, large cases and heavy bullets is you can't generate proper velocities without exceeding the pressure limits. Also, fast powders don't fill the case enough. I have found powders that almost fill the case usually deliver better velocity than those that don't fill the case. (all IMO of course)

In case anyone is interested I went the old fashioned way, used the phone and drove over to visit acquaintances who have manuals that I don’t. Lesson learned: I need to expand my reloading "library"

This is the info on Reloder 7 that I found so far for .308 Win
Lee 2nd ed.:
(110 gr jacketed) 41.2gr~3042fps (max 42.5gr)
(125 gr jacketed) 38.9gr~2838fps (max 40.0gr)
(150 gr jacketed) 36.1gr~2698fps (max 37.0gr~2750fps 46,900 CUP)

Alliant website:
(100 gr jacketed) 41.0gr~3003fps (no max listed)

Lyman 48th ed.:
(110 gr jacketed) 37.5gr~2898fps (max 42.0gr)
(125 gr jacketed) 35.0gr~2624fps (max 40.2gr)
(160 gr alloy #2) 25.0gr~1703fps (max 34.7gr~2346fps 34,700 PSI)
(170 gr alloy #2) 23.0gr~1870fps (max 41.5gr~2602fps 49,700 CUP)

(173 gr alloy #2) 27.5gr~1924fps (max 39.0)
(180 gr alloy #2) 28.0gr~1827fps (max 32.0)
(190 gr alloy #2) 25.0gr~1738fps (max 33.0)
(200 gr alloy #2) 22.0gr~1622fps (max 29.0)

This is the description from Lyman:
Reloder 7
The fastest of the Reloder series, suitable for a wide
range of cartridges from the 222 Remington to the 458
Winchester Magnum. It is perhaps the best choice for
the latter with 500-grain bullets as it takes up a minimum
of case space. It has a mix of red, yellow and
blue identifying granulations. Abbreviated as Rx7 in
our data.

and

308 Winchester
[…] The 308 Winchester also works well with cast bullets. Best
accuracy will usually occur in the velocity ranges of 1,600 to
2,000 feet per second. Cast bullet #311672, #311644, and
#311299 have proven popular with metallic silhouette shooters.
Reloder 7 and SR4759 will often give best results with
cast bullets.

Can anyone confirm or deny that Reloder 7 no longer has colored granules in it due to manufacturing changes? I have juat read comments in a discussion on this and would like some guidance. Supposedly changes took place around 12 years ago... Lyman's 48th ed. is from 2002-2004...
