If you never heard of or used the (free!) software available at www.shotgun-insight.com then I'm sorry, you missed a site that was extraordinarily useful. I don't mean the site is down, it's still up. But the tools available there, although still available for download, are essentially useless.

The problem is that the enormous effort that Dr. Andrew Jones put into understanding the science of external ballistics as applied to shot loads, and the software he developed to make his knowledge available to anyone with a pattern board, is wasted. His (highly recommended!) book is still available at the web site but the software is useless to anyone not using an antique computer with an unsupported operating system.

That's because all that software requires a browser that supports Java™, and Java has been deprecated for at least five years now. No current version of any of the common browsers I know of support it.

So here's my question: does anyone know of an alternative?

What are you having trouble with? I clicked on the link and proceeded to open things with no issues.

I've found Neil Winston's findings very interesting and informative.

Dr. Jones's pattern analysis software (which can still be downloaded) runs as an applet, and from the web site: "Java Version 1.4.1 or later supplied by Sun Microsystems is needed."

And as I said no modern browser (that I know of) will support Java or run a Java applet. Java, the underlying technology, is no longer available.

You can still get Java from Oracle. I know because a coworker was complaining that they just changed the license terms last month so you have to set up an account to download it. Though when I go there, it just asks me to click a button to agree to the license. They have Windows, Mac and Linux versions. https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk12-downloads-5295953.html is the place I was looking. I am sure they offer some tool to run applets even outside of the browser. And when I say "I am sure" I mean "I can't image they'd be dumb enough not to," but bit companies do lots of dumb stuff. Good luck.
