I just bought my first AR-15 (Bushmaster AK A3) and am hiding it from my girlfriend for fear of the repercussions of the fact I spent that much money on something other than a ring. I'm admittedly amused with myself.

girlfriends come and go. If she was your wife then maybe yes, but if a girlfriend doesn't love you for who you are and what you buy then she's never going to be a wife anyway and you shouldnt worry about what she thinks about your spending.

You're probably alright unless you tell your girlfriend that the reason you haven't bought her a ring yet is because you're broke.

    Repeat after me.....

"What? THAT gun? I've had that for years, honey. I just never shoot it much. Now that you mention it, I should start shooting it more often."

Even if you were married this would happen. Learn to live with the guilt - I do. Easily.

Besides, it adds spice to the relationship. I currently have three new guns that my wife doesn't know about. You're just a tourist.

My wife does not presume to tell me how to spend my money.

Nor do I presume to tell her how to spend hers.

As long as the bills are paid and the purchase doesn't put us in financial peril she says nothing. In fact she encourages me to buy what I want because she knows it makes me happy.

She has also realized that after I am dead she will sell the guns for a lot more than I paid for them. She seems to like that part.

I tell you what, I will hold onto the rifle for you until you can afford to buy the ring. Oh yeah, you also have to invite me to the bachelor party.

I can't speak for others, but I had no secrets from my girlfriends, nor from my wife. My wife knows every detail of my life...good, bad and indifferent. So did the girlfriends.

Girlfriend is as good as it gets. If she isn't cool now, she won't be cool later.

    I'd have to say "No"

You are not a bad person. If you were they would not have let you buy the gun. Women buy shoes, Guys buy Guns and more Guns, and ammo and holsters and more ammo. She has nothing to worry about until you start buying more shoes than Guns. lol

You hit the nail on the head. Basically, I'm intending to, as soon as I can financially justify it. I live with her and she's the one.
She actually is into firearms - not necessarily shooting, but having them. She thinks my LCP is "sexy" and I bought her a shotgun for Christmas.
I posted this more for my own humor than anything else - I'll be showing it off to her as soon as I get that ring.

I keep a slush fund for just such an occasion, a hidden slush fund. She will thank me later when the zombies invade.

QFT, sharing responsibilities is one thing, sharing bank accounts is another. Separate accounts equals marital bliss.

The girlfriend should stay just a girlfriend if she has a problem with you spending your money on what you like. My fiancée and I have an agreement, she won't complain about how many guns or how much ammo I have, and in return I won't complain about how many pairs of shoes and purses she has.

    It's a nice deal. :D

My wife and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary this September. The first gun I ever bought "new" was for her, in 1985 when we moved into our first home: a Mossberg 500 20 ga with an 18" barrel. It seemed to satisfy her "nesting instinct" and she took to it really well, shooting from the hip, she was a natural at chasing gallon paint-cans across a field.

Today we went shooting at our home range in a deep draw on the current home-spread. She's still a better shot than I am. She shot her Mossberg 20, my Mossberg 590 12 ga, (our bedroom HD SGs), then an Armscor Model 30R, then my recently acquired Marlin Camp 9, then an SKS (whoo hoo!), then our Mossberg 464 in 30-30 (she really likes it), then showed me up with a BHP, (which she loves) then the Taurus 94 (she doesn't like the heavy trigger-pull, I do) then the S&W 63 (she really likes that one too), then showed she could hit better with my S&W 442 than I can, and ended it all shooting 410 and .45 LC cowboy loads through my Taurus Judge, which she also likes. This was about three hours worth. A good girl with a natural point is a wonderful thing.

I guess I'm bragging. Sorry, I'm just pleased and proud. Choose your woman thoughtfully, bro.

    My Best, and Good Luck!
    Les

    I am truly blessed

I am blessed with a wife that can't tell the difference between an M1 Garand and a Marlin 1895. "Oh this? I've had this forever, I just put a different stock on it."

I'm not sure it will work with the Barrett coming on Thursday, but we shall see.

Meh... she'll ask what it cost - and I don't lie. Even if I did, she's a smart cookie.

A ring won't save your life, but an AR will..
