As the sunset provision for the AWB approaches, I find myself wondering if we shouldn't support renewing the law.

As long as it in place, the Democrats can continue the charade of pretending that they "banned" a whole class of "dangerous" firearms. As long as they can maintain this lie, they won't open this can of worms again.

If the law falls, they'll be forced to go back to the legislative table with a new law.

And a new law may actually ban some guns!

We all know that the "banned" firearms are still available (with new names and without bayonet lugs, etc).
And we all know high capacity mags are still available.

But the average liberal never walks into a gun store and doesn't know any of this. Liberals actually think the law banned some guns!
They are free to sleep well at night in the knowledge that no AK47-wielding militia nut will kick down their door and force them to vote Republican. Our liberal is free to vote for the democratic pols who pushed through the AWB and made him safe - and those same pols aren't ever going to admit the law is a charade because that would be tantamount to admitting they've been lying for the last ten years.

The dems keep telling their constituents they've "fixed" the Assault Weapons "problem" and as long as that charade continues, it's essentially a dead issue.

So, aren't we perhaps better off letting sleeping dogs (and liberal pols) lie?

There'll be new laws introduced regardless of the fate of the AWB; satisfaction comes only once we are completely, totally disarmed (see the UK re the extremes to which they are willing to go in their disarmament campaign). Antigun liberals are not content with banning "some" guns, and we shouldn't be content with letting them ban ANY guns!! They are willing to go piece-by-piece over the long haul, and they've said as much. Why give 'em a head start by keeping this law alive? Why allow them to continue to infringe on our RKBA? Why let 'em think or know we'll continue to roll over if it's not too painful? And remember, this is not a simple "renewal". The proposed AWB is much worse and more comprehensive.

Yeah, gotta agree with treeprof, Keith. The Disarmus crowd has no lack of "dangers" to try and legislate against. .50BMG rifles, the new S&W .50, etc.

There's been a certain amount of grumbling from them over the Beltway murders, having to do with AR-15s, "sniper rifles" in general and other folderol. Yet, IIRC, the murders were one-shot kills, were they not? We should ban Ruger #1s?

I have no clue as to how long the Democrats will be out of power in Congress. As I have become ever more a single-issue voter, I can only hope that this present non-anti-gun mindset of the Republicans continues. It seems to be our only hope against the unending nonsense in the minds of such as Schumer and Feinstein.

I'm with treeprof and Art. Remember in 1994 they wrote legislation defining a semi-automatic assault weapon. That was it, it was final, written into the United States Code...WRONG.

They immediately launched an offensive last fall to EXPAND the definition of a semi-automatic assault weapon because young John Malvo used a post ban Bushmaster rifle to shoot several people around the nations capitol. You don't believe for a minute that they were naive enough to believe they had actually banned an entire class of firearm when they passed the law. They knew that that definition was the best they could do at the time. They fully intended to expand it as soon as the expansion was politically feasible.

It's time to hand them a defeat. No compromise. I seem to recall that the English and French though that if they gave Hitler Checkoslovokia, that that would satisfy him. This is the same thing. The English and French could have crushed the Germans then, but rather then fight while they were strong, they chose to compromise. Then they had to fight after Hitler was strong. We are strong now. We must hand them a sound defeat on this issue. You must understand that nothing will satisfy them until all firearms are out of private hands.

No No No!!!!

I want a evil black rifle that can shoot thru a school bus filled with children! I need something that can it a kid on a swing at 5000 yards! I want a rifle with a bayonet on it so that I can stab someone instead of shooting them at 5000 yards!   :neener: :neener: :neener:

I understand your thinking - it seems like having a relatively token AW ban would be a good shield to stave off more bans.

Problem is, we need to take ground and roll back their "progress". this depresses them and makes them more fun to watch. They really do not understand how this might actually happen.

When you try to hold ground, the best you can do is not lose and eventually, you will lose some of your ground. Much better to "attack their plans" and roll back their precious laws.

Two Words

NO QUARTER

Now is the time to ATTACK. We have been handed defeat after defeat after defeat under the last administration. I am SICK of the incremental encroachment on our rights wich will lead to the eventual total ban on weapons and the tyrany which always follows such acts.

NO QUARTER

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Did you ever work on a car and get to the last screw and suddenly bash the engine with a sledgehammer?

Were you ever thinking about getting mugged while armed and think it might better to just hand your gun over to someone with a knife?

Are you experiencing a lack of attention lately that you had to come up with this thread?

Sheesh!

:banghead:

< the Democrats can continue the charade of pretending that they "banned" a whole class of "dangerous" firearms. As long as they can maintain this lie, they won't open this can of worms again. >

Congratulations. You've been brainwashed. You are a perfect example of the anti-RKBA strategy, and how it works.

If only you'd said, "I'm a hunter, and I don't understand why anyone needs an AK-47. Let's roll over for the anti's and leave the semi-auto nuts hang out to dry. Give them this victory, and they'll leave us alone."

Then the next John Malvo does his deed with a scoped Remington 700. I suppose then you'd be in the "Ban the sniper-style high-power rifles" crowd. I mean, hey, if you're a black powder hunter, you have nothing to fear from a ban on centerfire rifles, right?

Divide and conquer, parse and define. Then re-define. That's what they're up to, and you're vying for poster child status.

Now, now, girls!

I've got a couple of evil black rifles myself. I'd just hate to see a defeat on the issue re-energizing the liberals to take them away from me!
We haven't heard much about gun control since 9/11 and really, not much action since the AWB went in. They talk a lot, but the bills die on the vine in committee.
Groups like HCI are dying for lack of funds, and interest. Nobody cares any more!

I have mixed feelings, but I suspect that if we shove the AWB back up their collective... behinds, we'll just throw gas on the fire.

I could be wrong... it's happened before.
