This is amazing! From the Telegraph, London (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/mai....xml&sSheet=/portal/2003/04/09/ixportal.html):

    Elephants 'free captive antelope'
    By Christopher Munnion in Johannesburg
    (Filed: 09/04/2003)

South African conservationists are baffled by the behaviour of a herd of elephants which appeared to raid an enclosure on a private game reserve "deliberately" to release a group of antelope captured by rangers as part of a relocation and breeding programme.

Lawrence Anthony said his capture team thought the elephants in the Thula Thula reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal were approaching the enclosure to share the bales of lucerne being fed to the captive antelope.

"The herd circled the fence and then the matriarch moved to the gate and very carefully and deliberately undid all the gate's metal latches with her trunk and pushed it open."

He added: "The antelope took their chance and dashed back into the bush followed by the elephants, who did not give the food a second glance."

Mr Anthony said the antelope would be recaptured as they were part of an important conservation programme.

"It will be a difficult few days work, but it will have been worthwhile just to watch this amazing example of animal behaviour and interaction between species," he said.

Ummm, I think the proper grammar is "horned" friends! :D

Elephants are incredibly intelligent...wonder why they let them out?

I bet the Elephants and the Antelope had signed a mutual defense pact. The Elephants tried to get a coalition of the willing, but the United Animals Security Council was under threat of veto by the weasels and the jackals. :D
