I am looking at an AMD-based build with the wire side folding stock. I like the looks of the underfolder better, but I don't like A) having to push a button when I unfold it or B)the fact that it blocks the safety when folded. Short of going to a left-side folder (which will cost a lot more money), I think the AMD stock looks the best of those commonely available.

First, how are ergonomics with it? Does the recoil kick the hell out of your face?

Second, do you still have to depress a button to unfold the stock, or is it held in place by sheer friction or detente?

Third, does it take a licking and keep in ticking? I am not going to baby an AK, so if this thing is going to bend from the occasional drop or ding, I'm not interested.

How does that sidefolder lock, either open or closed...

If there's no latch or button to push? Does it use the SAW-style spring-loaded wedge block?

My Romanian sidefolder has one button to lock it either open or closed. Quite solid, not at all flimsy, and the cheek weld hurts considerably less than my underfolder. ;)

Amd-63s had a standard wooden stock. It's the AMD-65s that have the wire folder, and they lock with a button (both closed and open) on the underside of the receiver on the lefthand side right behind the pistol grip.

The button can irritate the top of your thumb near the webbing sometimes when shooting, but they lock up tightly in both positions.

You'll be very hard pressed to get any kind of cheek-weld, so you'd have to try REALLY hard to have one hurt your face from recoil.

They do not have a solid wire for the arm (I know this because I cut one off for a pistol build) but are very durable, all the same. They will take some serious abuse.

I really like the function of mine but don't care for the looks of it so much. Function for me is everything and looks mean nothing, though. All in all, I like it, but if there's one I like a little better, though it's the Romy side folder:

No modification to the receiver is neccesary (with the Romy) and the lever is in the rear so it won't hurt your thumb. My friend just got one of these and I'm impressed with it.
