• Possible Downtime Alert

I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

Well hello everyone!

I'm sitting on a chamber pot full of 7.62x39mm ammunition left over from the SKS's I sold off a year or two ago. I need something to shoot this through! So I've had my eye on an AK pattern gun for some time now.

It seems that there is a company making an AMD-65 style rifle called Clearview Investments. It seems these are going for about $550 new, which I think is a good price and the guns just look so cool and unique. Here is one for sale on Gunbroker:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=537292383

So are these builds garbage? Are they junk? Will they break down on me and fail? This will be a range gun to supplement my PTR-91, which shoots rather expensive 7.62x51mm rounds. I like the fact that an AK shoots less expensive ammo that still hits well out to 300 meters.

What do you guys know about these AMD-65 build guns? Like I said they look soooooo cool, and the price is reasonable. But, if they're some low-quality thrown together junk build that jam up all the time, I'll pass.

Let me know guys! :D

Wire folders simply suck to shoot with. You can ad a foregrip/muzzle brake to any standard pattern AK. I'd step up a little to a well known brand and customize to your needs.

Then too, you could simply sell off the ammunition couldn't you? That is of course unless you simply want another rifle chambered in 7.62 X 39.

I'm just not familiar with them, but building one isn't rocket science. I built mine and once you get used to giving up the hug they are really excellent rifles. The gas tube will only bite you one time and after it gets the respect it deserves. A well assembled one is as reliable and accurate as an AK can be.
The muzzle break gets you all of the elbow room you'll need, so keep in mind being on the sides is very uncomfortable to your fellow shooters with the concussion being almost like St. Helens erupting.

It may run fine, but that uncovered gas tube and wire stock could really bite you!

I like the Veprs if I am going to shoot one a lot. Longer stock which I like and quality builds.

Tons of good options out there, many of which I think would make a better range rifle than the one you linked to here.

Wasr's are still the best bang for buck AK on the market. I'd look into an Atlantic Firearms QC inspected rifle. One step up from that and I'd snag a Norinco Mak or NHM. For the money, try to stay with a rifle that has a forged trunnion.

The AMD 65 wire folder is my favorite AK stock by a wide margin. Ive installed one on several rifles. Locks solid open and closed and clearance for bolt carrier and side scope mounts. Its also the only factory stock with a rubber but pad. Cheek welds are worthless.

Think of the AMD-65 as the Hungarian version of the M3 Greasegun. It was purposed for armored vehicle crews. The kits built now are on longer barrels than they originally came with (16" vs. 12") or if it's the original barrel they have an elongated flash hider permanently attached.

The wire folder stock isn't exactly... well, it's not a target stock. There's ways around that though. They're a fun, neat, and different take on AK's that you won't see everyday at the range.

Its an AK with AK sights. A good cheek weld isnt going to do you any good anyway.

So you want to buy another rifle just to shoot up the ammo you have on hand? Then what, are you going to buy more ammo or sell the rifle? Why not sell that ammo and roll it into feeding the PTR?
Well I've been in the market for a 7.62x39mm semi-auto rifle for some time now. Mostly because I've got over 1000 rounds here with nothing to use it in. As much as I adore shooting my PTR-91, the ammo cost does add up. I would certainly buy more ammo after I shoot up all the x39 ammo I have.

I just think the AMD-65 is so cool, but I would want to make sure this build is reputable and most importantly reliable above all else before purchasing. The only thing I would do to the gun is add a military style sling. I am a KISS type of guy when it comes to these guns.

The wire stock is solid, but yeah, I concur about the cheek weld. Works with a red dot just fine.

You have to improvise sometimes. That forend gets hot!

A friend shooting my AMD-65. It got a little hot for him, so he grabbed a shop rag. I wear gloves usually.

I've shouldered an AMD-65. Ergos were crap. Salesman even said he owned one and agreed. No way to replace that useless wire stock without major surgery.

Your example comes with a 4140 unlined barrel. Not one I would recommend for steel ammo.

Shoot one first, then decide if you still want one.

Personally, I would rather have a Czech VZ58 with a solid buttstock.

Ive done 100 round mag dumps with full auto AMD's back in my 02/07 days and I never thought it got that hot.

I'd pass. Hold out for an FÉG receiver build with chrome lined Hungarian barrel. Like those made by TGI a few years ago. Also, plan on aquiring a few 20rd mags. The 30's suck to use with the foreword vertical grip.

Those are built on FEG receivers. The company has been doing these up for a few years. Google them for more info to satisfy yourself before buying. It does have the forward grip to keep the hands off the lower. The plastic grip makes the use of 30rnd. mags difficult, but it can be changed to wood which makes their use easier.
