The latest issue attempts a review of the Winchester Model 70. Very recently Winchester has released a new edition of this classic that tries to recapture some of the popularity and respect given the "pre '64" Model 70's. For the uninitiated in 1964 Winchester succumbed to financial pressures creating a rifle that could more efficiently be mass produced giving up some of the inherent quality and features of the previous (and superb) version of the Model 70. They made this worse from a PR perspective by marketing the changes as improvement. No one was fooled regarding which was silk purse and which was sow's ear.

The closest this article comes to complaining is when they attribute fit and finish issues to "possibly just teething issues that come with a newly minted model", and describe that out of the box accuracy as "adequate". The rest is a mixture of technical analysis and cheerleading.

Having begun to read between the lines of these articles some time ago, and also needing to refill the hole in my collection for a 30.06 bolt (and needing to be very careful for financial reasons), I will look forward too handling a new 70 in a gun shop. I will do so with a great deal more initial cynicism than I would have if not for these subtle remarks as I'm sure the price tag will be hefty to try to cash in on the idea of a pre 64 rebirth.

I long for the American Rifleman of 30-40 years ago but all things change. I AM NOT thinking about giving up my NRA membership even though they have evolved into being PAC first, anything else second.

I like Rifleman, but could do without the truck and ATV reviews.. I can see why they would have them in Hunter, but would prefer more gun related articles in AR.

NRA

I went the Life Member route - great organization - good magazine

I get the AR mag and everytime it comes I am disappointed.
Way to many ads. They are not bad though.

When will I get this?

I joined the NRA last month and I signed up to receive this magazine. I still haven't gotten it in the mail. How long does it take them to send it?

I sometimes get one sent over by a buddy, love it as it's a good read. The reviews I've read have been pretty balanced.

The vehicle articles do nothing for me but I assume that they are paid advertising and a sad necessity. The Dope Bag reviews are some of the best short reviews you'll find anywhere. Some magazines will make excuses for a poor (or just an average) shooting rifle and show you a photo of the only three shots that landed in the same zip code. They will give only a vague description of the shooting. This is what passes for accuracy testing.

American Rifleman shoots four five shot groups with each ammo and shows you the results. Often the results are not flattering. This would be a good standard for other mags to follow.

The historical articles are among the best as well due to the NRA's great collection and knowldge.
