What's the definition of an ammo hoarder? One who stocks up for longer than 3 months... 1 year... 3 years... 10 years... a lifetime... one who buys calibers they don't have guns for?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Please note that I'm NOT talking about stocking up to re-sell (scalp) during the next scare. This POLL is only regarding PERSONAL USE... and maybe to supply others we know.

RE MY opinion: I don't care if others stock up for 3 months or 30 years. If I could afford to I'd stock knee-deep... but I can't.

EDIT #2: I guess I should have added three more options... "2 years", "5 years", and "no amount is excessive".

I think that a three year supply is a prudent goal.
That's what I have, but would feel better with more.
Ammo is a great item for barter. Look at what you
can get for a brick or two of .22lr

Poll should have allowed the ability to select more than one. Personally, buying ammo for guns you don't have along with keeping more than 3 year's supply is a touch much, IMO. YMMV

Thanks Carne... how many years supply would you consider hoarding?

Thanks oneouncload... yes, that last option could have been multiple choice but I didn't want to confuse the rest of the poll. So, you'd vote anything longer than 3 years is hoarding?

I wish I could edit to re-word the poll options but I can't. Maybe, for example, the 3 year option should have read "longer than 3 years supply". Or maybe I could have added a 2 year and a 5 year option. Oh well. :)

EDIT: I guess I should have added an "I don't think any amount is excessive... hoarding". Another oversight... sorry.

Mike, so far the poll is calling hoarding buying stuff you don't need and cannot use. More options for # of years wouldn't change much there.
If I could have selected two options I would have done lifetime+ supply & don't own firearms for as both fall under the cannot use heading. We're assuming this is not bought for resale, passing along, etc.

Let's see if I understand this; having more than a 3-years supply makes me a hoarder?
Why? Is the price of components suddenly going to decrease over the next three years?
Are you planning on selling your guns after three years?
And for some of us; '10 years supply' could constitute a 'lifetime supply'.
Perhaps we should have the federal government ration ammo out fairly to all?

One man's hoard might just be another man's prudence. ;)

.

IMO it is a personal matter...

So I voted "buying ammo for guns you don't have" lol

But I HAVE done that also, bought ammo for a gun I did not own.
During the max-crazy time after Sandy Hook, all I could find was
40 or 45, cannot remember which. BUT, I now own BOTH, so it's all good :neener:

I think any supply you see fit to lay up properly stored, for yourself and or others around you that YOU KNOW will be needed, (likely) is OK by me. But I draw the line at stocking up to sell during the next "scare". I have a good bit of 22lr but when I think of selling some, I think that I might as well sell it ALL and sell the guns also, cuz I'm not for the hoarding just to make a buck. So I guess I will KEEP what I have :D

An ammo hoarder is like any other hoarder. They buy and keep things they have no real need for other than satisfying psychological problems. Having enough ammo and being prepared is not hoarding at all, regardless of how much or how little.

In before the lock....

First, a definition:

hoard (hôrd, hōrd)
n.
A hidden fund or supply stored for future use; a cache.
v. hoard·ed, hoard·ing, hoards
v.intr.
To gather or accumulate a hoard.
v.tr.
1. To accumulate a hoard of.
2. To keep hidden or private.

Thus, ANY accumulation of anything is considered a "hoard" of those things. Thus, anyone who has ANY ammunition at home (even one bullet) has a "hoard". Note that a "hoard" has absolutely NO inference of quantity. If I start a rock collection, and add one rock to it, then my "hoard" of rocks numbers one. Thus, ALL of the choices in the poll indicate someone is creating their own hoard.

Bypassing semantics, if I could purchase a lifetime supply of ammo per gun, I would do it. In fact, it would be meeting my "needs". (To the naysayers: are we now going to define "need" as something daily, weekly or monthly?).

To the OP: get over it. We didn't need another daily hoard topic.

What's the definition of an ammo hoarder?
See my previous post. You might have consulted a dictionary before you decided to redefine it for yourself.

Not the definition of hoarding. This is a definition that YOU made up out of thin air.

But I draw the line at stocking up to sell during the next "scare".

also not within the definition of hoarding....

Mike, so far the poll is calling hoarding buying stuff you don't need and cannot use.

and thus, the poll is immediately bogus because that is NOT the definition of hoarding!

I had to vote if you buy ammo for guns you don't even have. Although I suppose if you stock up on a cartridge for a gun on your wish list, that is okay.

I am glad it is in terms of years and not quantity. For some, having 10,000 rounds is hoarding, but for others, it is just one year's worth of ammo.

I don't think much anger is spewed toward people who are prepared and have collected modest stashes to supply them through the lean times. It is the scalpers that get most of my scorn.

Okay, yeah, I probably should have called it "excessive hoarding" but most folks understand the intent. :)

These replies are just rude. There's no need to insinuate others are ignorant buffoons... even if we are.

Any one could Google the dictionary definition. I believe the OP is looking for the individual personal definitions by members here, a subjective answer, not necessarily an objective one. Thus the poll, altho bogus in your subjective opinion could be valid in his opinion.

Agreed ;)
