Which brand of ammo (wolf or pmc) have you guys found to be better for plinking/target shooting? I know not to expect excellent accuracy from either of these choices but i'm not aiming to put 2 bullets through the same hole. I will be firing .223 out of a 581 series mini 14/ranch rifle, if that makes any difference.

I'd use the PMC. I run brass through all but one of my weapons and it was made to eat the Commie stuff. The polymer coatings they put on the new Wolf ammo can gum up the works over time. While PMC is a tad dirty burning the Wolf is worse yet. JMHO

my first ar ran wolf and other steel cased ammo no problem. however my current ar does not, so i have switched to pmc. it is quality, reliable, accurate enough for what i need, and i really isn't that bad priced compared to other makers ammo out there.

the wolf causes major issues in my ar, and that gets me frustrated and cus into my training and i don't like that at all.

No comparison - PMC is far better. It's also priced much higher. PMC is brass cased, boxer primed ammo, and its quality compares to the cheaper US production (UMC, WWB). Wolf is el cheapo Russian steelcased. It goes bang but is at the bottom of the list of things that go bang. Accuracy is much better with PMC and you can reload the brass.

The polymer on the steel cased ammo is not what gums up your rifle. Its the fact that the steel case does not fully expand like a brass case so gasses and carbon get by and eventually foul tighter tolerance weapons. AKs dont have a problem becasue of the amount of daylight in there. Another concept is that 7.62x39 is a tapered case and will resist feeding problems more than a straight case, however this I have not verified but it is in the design I have read.

I have guns in .223 that will shoot well under an inch with PMC... never come anywhere near that with Wolf...

I also find PMC to be cleaner and more reliable... especially in my semi-autos

Agreed; however, if you are just plinking Wolf may be just as good and save a bit of cash. A Mini should eat both equally well, but try small quantities first.

:)

If cost is a concern and Wolf is considered, I'd take a good look at Silver Bear ammo. I've been shooting it for a while and have well over 4K rounds of it through my latest pencil barrel build. It's it a bit more of a stout round compared to the Wolf and it burns a bit cleaner. I shoot the 62gr HP. The only problem I've had with it is an occassional failure to extract. It does that when the chamber gets way too dirty and this happens sometimes because I've been running it on a piston upper that I don't clean very often. I just run the chamber brush through it and all is fine again. At less than $5 a box from cheaperthandirt, it's hard to beat for plinking ammo.

I don't know why opinions of the PMC stuff always comes with qualifiers. I've found it to be good stuff. It isn't tack driving stuff, but neither is any M193 ammo. It is a bit underpowered, since it's loaded to SAAMI spec, but still good ammo. Lots of places have it for around $7 a box.

And still, if cost is a concern, you could also check out the Speer M193 (stamped LC) at surplusammo. It's the same price as the PMC. You might also want to take a look at the BVAC reloaded stuff at cheaperthandirt. Something around $16 for a box of 50 55gr FMJ loaded in LC brass.

I'm gonna keep shooting the Silver Bear. If you go the Wolf or Silver Bear route, you MIGHT want to pick up an extra extractor, as the steel cases are sometimes rough on the extractors. As for the Wolf, (if memeory serves) stick with the military classic. It's loaded a bit hotter than the other stuff.

Pmc bt 55g is only 7 bucks per box of 20. Wolf is 2 bucks less...so what? I would rather spend 2 more bucks and have better ammos

In an AR PMC...in a mini the wolf runs fine....and is cheaper...unless you reload the brass you may as well shoot wolf...just clean the chamber before you go back to brass cased ammo.

Toss a coin or buy the least expensive of the two.

Either ammo will work well enough for short range plinking. Neither ammo can be relied on for consistent accuracy but it sounds as if you already know that.

Wolf (steel cased) is last resort ammo for me. I prefer anything to it, but if I have no other choice, I will shoot wolf. PMC is good in my experience.
