Has anyone heard of Liberty Ammo. I was impressed with their 45acp, and 9mm ammo, but was wondering if anyone knows anything about their 38 ammo being used in a Snub Nose 38. Would be grateful for any info. Thanks.

Different manufacturers have made ultra light weight ultra high velocity ammo for years. It probably has its applications but IMO would be in more widespread use if it was that good. If you're talking a j frame size 38, I use standard velocity wadcutters or semi wadcutters in those guns and it's always worked for me on more than one occasion.

Please explain how you were "impressed" with their ammunition.

Have you seen the ballistics gel testing on them? Notice anything? They underpenetrate severely for serious self defense against human agressors.

I'd imagine the .38 special load would have the same issues. My $0.02? Avoid this ammo. Get yourself some Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel .38 special +P 135 grain ammo if you are serious about defense with a snub-nosed revolver.

JMHO.

YMMV.

Gimmick. Underpenetrates. Probably shoots very low.

Confusing advertising. Says its good for home defense but has "maximum...barrier penetration." This does not compute.

Better to get some real ammo, e.g., Gold Dots or Golden Sabers.

Cooldill, I did see the ballistic jell test on the 45, and 9. both went about 10.5in. I will be the first to say I know squat about this kind of stuff, that is why I'm asking. I am looking for something that will spend all of it's energy inside the cavity and will not exit. I am open to all advice.

Jimmy...

I have no experience with Liberty Ammo. I use a few brands of commercial ammunition for specific purposes and handload most.

Consider these guidelines.

Find a brand that loads, shoots well (to the sights, within reason and is suitable for your shooting ability, hand and arm strength) and extracts from YOUR sidearm.

Understand that the loading that delivers the most velocity in a 'long' barrel will deliver the most velocity in a 'short' barrel. There are reasons, yes. This is not the place. "Special" ammo for short barrels is more of a sales pitch than a reality.

Understand that accuracy can be very different depending on the gun involved. (More velocity from above does not mean greater accuracy in all cases.)

In any event, and some very special exceptions excluded, the shooter's ability to put rounds exactly where they should be delivered is more important than the advertised 'power' of the round.

My very best wishes and the best of luck to you.

I think you first must establish criteria to evaluate SD ammunition. These threads always generate posts where people list the round they carry but don't list the reason why.

I think to go about selecting a self-defense cartridge, you have to gain an understanding or at least form a belief about what causes incapacitation.

For myself, the number one criteria for an SD cartridge is that the bullet must penetrate sufficiently deep, under a wide variety of situations, to reach vital tissue.

The Liberty ammo fragments with most of the petals / fragments stopping short of 5 inches. The remaining base tumbles and usually stops short of 12 inches.

After you form a belief about what cause incapacitation, you have to make a decision about what situations you want to be prepared for, how much of the bell curve you want to cover with your firearm and ammunition. On one end of the spectrum is a frontal shot on the skinny guy wearing a T-shirt. The skinny guy is 11" from front to back - not much muscle, a frontal shot with a 30gr copper disc that penetrates 10" is going to reach vital tissue, given proper shot placement. On the other end of the bell curve is having to take a cross shot on a barrel-chested, muscle-bound thug wearing a jean jacket over a shirt, and a T-shirt underneath that. Will the base of the Liberty bullet go through a jean jacket, a shirt, a T-shirt, a bicep, another layer of T-shirt, another layer of shirt, another layer of jean jacket, another layer of jean jacket, another layer of shirt, another layer of T-shirt and still reach vital organs?

Tests in denim covered gel predict that it won't.

Defense against predators on a run or walk near areas with high feral dog population I carry 158 gr swc i load myself in my taurus 605, I have used it against a feral shepherd mix that attacked my lab , it was not a pretty sight .

For defense against 2 legged vermin as others has suggested the gold dot load is highly rated although i myself choose the the remington plus p 158 gr swchp .
