Ammo shortage over, mostly, for me at least

Yesterday on my way out of the Chicago metro area I stopped at a large and popular gun store (GAT, just north of Elgin, IL) that I have occasion to visit periodically. The last time I was there, several weeks ago, they had most types ammo available, at about normal pre-shortage prices, but limited sales to one box of each caliber, and 250 rounds of 22LR. Yesterday there were no limits on how much you could buy, other than being limited to one box of 500 (or 525) of 22LR. The shelves were well stocked with every caliber of handgun ammo that I could think of, so I bought what I wanted and went on my way. Maybe not everywhere, but it appears that the worst of the shortages must be over if this store can get in enough handgun ammo to not have to place restrictions on quantity and yet able to keep the shelves pretty full. My guess is that by my next visit I will be able to buy as much 22LR as I want. So for me, stocking up is no longer an issue with about 2,000 rounds of other than 22LR and another 2,000 rounds of 22LR, about all I can stuff into my small ammo safe.

Until bulk ammo is available for sale on line for pre-panic prices, the shortage is not over.

Until Wal Mart has a full ammo shelf, the panic is not over.

Until I can buy primers, bullets and powder online again, the panic is not over.

I will predict at least 2 more panics between now and the time Obama leaves office.

The real panic will begin if the Dems win back their supermajority in the House in 2014. You can kiss your assault weapons goodbye by then. Plus with the changing demographics and the amnesty of 20 million illegals you have at least 10 to 15 years before the entire 2nd amendment is gutted out completely. Expect a majority Liberal Supreme Court within the next 10 years. They will not rule in favor of the 2nd Amendment. The Republican and Libertarian party will be relegated to the dustbin of history.

If I were you guys you should stock up on ammos and guns as much as possible. The future won't be so bright for gun owners.

Was in one of our Walmarts recently and they had tula 223 on the shelf for 5.27, picked up a couple since my Mini loves it. Was in one of the others a couple of days later and they had about 25 boxes of Winchester 556 on the shelf, $12 per box. never seen the Winchester before so not sure what the price is like, but our LGS has had American Eagle 223 for about $9 per box with a 5 box limit, and they haven't been out yet.

All the Wal Marts here have bare ammo shelves, save for a few shotgun shells.

I have a buddy who keeps me up to date about Wal Mart ammo deliveries via his phone app. I have found that some of the Wal Mart employees are stashing ammo and buying it themselves, probably selling at inflated prices. On of them got upset when I called the manager to check the back and he (manager) came out with the ammo that I wanted and the employee said "that was my ammo".

This morning the Lawton Cache Road Wal-Mart had about 40 boxes of Tula 7.62X39 at $5.29 each. There was one box of Tula .380 ammo.

As for panics I expect no more as this one won't die off at least until Jan. 20, 2017. It may take a breather but it will flare up again just like any wildfire. A very long 4 year panic.
That is pretty pessimistic. The mid-term elections are important and certainly the Presidential election. How are you going to feel when Hillary becomes the next Democratic nominee for President? .... yep, buy guns and more ammo.... But in the near term, I think you will see significant changes in availability in the next couple of months. You won't feel compelled to stand in line at Academy.

I'm still waiting for it to improve here in NE Kansas. So far, no readily available 22LR at Cabela's or Walmart or Bass Pro.

I hear ya Sniper66, I check Topeka, Manhattan, Junction City, and Salina regularly and they are just getting in dribbles of the popular calibers. Plenty of .270, 300 Win Mag, 30-06, etc, but just the occasional case of 9mm, .45, .38, or .22, and that is gone within minutes.

But its good to hear that things are getting better in some areas.

This shortage seems to be determined by the relationship between WalMart and Gunbroker/Armslist.

When the young people who paid loan shark prices figure out that they were suckers, prices will drop much more and create far less incentive for flippers.

That's possible if gun control continues to be remain an active issue at the national level. Otherwise it will probably die down just like it did last term. I bought a good deal of ammunition at reasonable prices last summer without having to employ any heroic measures.

If a strong message were to be sent with the mid-term congressional elections, that could pretty much insure a rapid return to a more normal availability situation that would likely last a few years.

We can only hope that Democrats don't gain the house by a large majority in 2014 or else you can expect gun control to become a much more serious debate. I'm not a fan of many republican ideals but at least for now they're not trying to enact dictator-like gun control legislation.

When we lose our right to bear arms we'll lose our freedom of speech and protection against unlawful searches.

Probably a realistic scenario. Not getting political, just trying to face facts as a shooter. As long as this administration is in office, there will always be uncertainty in the minds of many shooters. And that uncertainty is one of the causes of panic.

You'd think, though, that if people go through enough panics, they'd panic less, if you know what I mean. :)

Panic is not over here. The local Walmarts have nothing on the shelves unless you get there right when they open. The local gun shops have a little and ration it off or won't sell it unless you buy a gun in that caliber

Not much if any in the stores around Tallahassee. Academy always has a line (vultures roost) every morning waiting to rush the gun section of anything that might have been stocked overnight. Last gun show in town did have some powders at about 25 bucks a pound for most and a few primes at 45 dollars per M. I built up a good inventory before this last SHTF deal so have really not been effected and have not had to ration myself.

Vito- didn't notice if they had any LPPs on the shelf perhaps? I called there other day, but the guy was busy at the counter and said he couldn't walk over to see for sure- but "thought" they had some.

At a little over an hour one way drive for me, I don't just head over there with them "thinking" they have stock.

Panic is a state of mind. There is ammo all around online and in LSGS.

Just because Wal-Mart does not have ammo is not a reason to panic. They are just one store out of many.

You can panic because prices are higher than you want to spend for ammo, but heck, for me that is true of about everything these days. I can not image panicing every time a price goes up.

It is getting better. Just bought some SD .380 ammo for $18 a box when it was selling for $36 a box the week before and some still selling at those higher prices.

WalMart, Schmalmart (pun intended for Germans/Austrians etc).

The CMP's M2 Ball might remain priced at .50/rd. for a while, and luckily they are a non-profit, very dedicated specialist organization.
80% of my ammo money will continue to be spent on this for the next two years or so, unless a shipload of very cheap, good .303 Brit. is discovered (not POF).

Ever?

I do not think ammo prices will ever shrink to pre-panic levels. Here in southeast Wisconsin, a chain called Fleet Farm, usually had the best ammo prices. Today, in passing, I saw Russian made, no name ak47 ammo for $.75/pop (no pun intended). Pre-panic I was buying Wolf steel 7.62x39 for about $.22/pop. Wolf is the most accurate in my Saiga AK 47. When Fleet Farm does have .22LR they sell it for about 15% over pre-panic prices. They limit to 10 boxes of 50 or three boxes of 100 or over. Even at those limits it always sells out in 20 minutes of less.

Plenty of ammo at a recent NM show in Albuq. It just cost alot. Piles of 22LR...for at least $50 per brick.

No ammo shortage here.
