Ammo Shortage?

The thing is it wasn't just one store. I checked two walmarts and a gunshop yesterday, and two more gunshops today. Both the walmarts were out of 9mm and .45 and the gunshops only had a box or two of the top shelf stuff and I wasn't about to spend $30 for 50 rounds of 9mm.

I have not seen this 2012 shortage yet. Whether Walmart has a particular ammo they stock is not indicative of an ammo shortage. Maybe the last customer just bought a bunch. I keep a good supply of ammo on hand and can weather most any temporary shortage lasting up to 6 months with zero impact to my shooting routines.

I go to Walmart one way or another just about every week. As of last week, there were no shortages except for the $1.47/box Federal Lightning 22 ammo which they were sold out of. But the other Walmart has lots at $1.97/box. It is all about the price.

Okay, here's what the sporting goods clerk at WalMart told me the other day (and if you can't trust a sporting goods clerk at WalMart, who CAN you trust??):

He said the Department of Homeland Security just placed an enormous ammo order from Federal, as in many millions of rounds for a variety of callibers from 9mm to .40 S&W to .223 to .308, etc. He said that this has backlogged Federal, so everyone's buying up other brands.

Hey, that's just what he told me. I went to the store on the other side of town and bought a couple boxes of Fed 9mm, so who knows.

Interesting. Why does Homeland Security need an enormous amount of ammo? I keep watching for black helicopters.

WalMarts near me in North end of the Peoples Republic of Illinois are all empty except for Shotshells, .22's and odd rifle calibers. Went to three this week before I ordered 1000 Reloaded .40's for $229.00 online.
As for Homeland they will be OBama's SS after the election....:-(

please read that before listening to the guy at wal-mart. All my local everything has whatever ammo I need when I get there, nothing at all like '08. As long as we don't panic we will be fine people.

After going to Cabelas in Lacy, WA and Wally-Worlds in the Portland Metro Area -- There isn't a shortage, at least not anything that comes near '08.

Wally-World has UMC Mega Packs in all calibers, Value Packs in all calibers, Cabelas has all calibers in ammo cans, they were a wee bit short on defensive rounds in 9mm but not close to out.
