I hear of guys that don't have room for more guns in their safes because it is full of ammo. I'm wondering how many do this and to what degree.

Shoot, I don't have room in the safe for ammo because of all the guns.

I am looking for a better solution for ammo storage than my spare bedroom. Tips are welcome. :p

Just keep a box or two handy for the gun of the day....bulk of it is stored elsewhere.

I keep most of my ammo in a chest of drawers.

I store my guns in my gun safes & my ammo in my ammo safes.

I thought everybody did it that way.

I never understood why people would waste valuable safe space on ammo...

Unless they don't have enough guns.

28 gun safe. Half for guns (full), half for ammo and other valuables (also full).

The ammo overflows into the closet and the garage...

Ammo is as valuable as guns in this day and age. I store as much as will fit in the safe(RSC), but plan to purchase a lockable metal cabinet of some sort(stack on) on my next trip home. Most of it is rather unsecured in the closet.

    Ammo storage

I believe in seperation of ammo and weapons, except for my concealed carry. I bought a heavy metal cabinet, put it in the garage, shot concrete nails through and into the floor, lag boted it to wall studs from the inside, put metal strips inside and bolted those to a beefd up lock to which I have the only key. My wife thought I was nuts. After loading the ammo in, I stenciled "PAINT" on the outside and flammable. Last touch was to add drips from a half dozen color paints to the cabinet and garage floor, then blow on some dust. Now my wife knew I was crazy. LESS THAN A MONTH LATER I SAW MY WIFE TRYING TO OPEN MY AMMO LOCKER. SHE WAS LOOKING FOR PAINT! After reminding her she thought I was crazy I opened the locker and she remembered. 21 years in that house and no one ever suspected ammo. Last time she called me nuts too.

I would consider the metal cabinet for ammo but with enough of us doing so, I'm sure some thief will stumble upon an open cabinet and then our cover will be blown.

Tell ya'll what - as soon as ya tell me how ta store 2500 rounds of .45, 2000 rounds of .40, 1000 of .357....ah, heck - let's put it this way - I've got a tad over 10,000 rounds of various ammo - ain't NO WAY I'm gonna take up that much room in the safe!

i have too much ammo at any given time to ever fit in a safe, between reloads, factory, jhp's, rifle, shotgun ammo, loaded ar mags etc.
plus the guns are what needs to be secured imho.

I was taught NEVER to store ammo in a safe; always keep it in cabinets that will not grenade in a fire. Wooden cabinets are required of commercial establishments.

texasredneck, 10,000 rounds is adequate for some, but it is child's play for many on here. Personally, I'd be freaking out to get down to that amount.

I have some ammo in my safe, mostly hard to find ammo and a few boxes to get me by should the need arise that I have to fight my way to my ammo supply  Most of mine is stored in ammo cans with tags so I know what is in each one, works great until you have 3 ammo cans full of one caliber and two cans full of nothing but overflow ammo (cheap ammo you cant pass up even when you already have 2500 rounds of a particular caliber) The ammo cans keep the ammo dry and air tight, works great for me!:D Or you could just get some PVC and burry it ;)

Well I put all of my guns in the safe and there is no room for ammo so I bought a fire safe from Wal-Mart and attempted to store it in there but I ran out of room! Anyways I started puting all of my ammo in 2 of my dresser drawers. I really would like to put away most of my ammo in the safe but I would have to have a bunch of ammo in different places so I am not really sure what I will do. I will take suggestions if anyone has any!

My closet is like a safe room. My ammo is in there.

    my 2 cents

I keep all my ammo in my safe. And like somebody earlier posted, it is likely because I dont have enough guns yet. But, to my credit, i got a big stinkin safe:)

I thought ammo inside the safe is a must, in the event the house burns, you wouldnt want the emergency responders or the neighbors to be getting assailed by burning shotgun rounds and whatnot. Am I crazy for thinking this?

    Ammo stored separately from guns

I don't store ammo in the gun safe. I reload enough for the next match and that stays in the locked wooden cabinet. The home defense ammo is already in the semi-auto and the shotgun. If I need more than that I am screwed.

This sounds crazy, but what about storing ammo in a coffin? It'd creep the hell out of most thieves...

The only ammo in my safe is the buckshot in the shell holder on the stock of my Remington 870 Express.
