Here in NYC we have these welfare hotels that rip off the city charging luxery hotel rates to house people and families in squalerous rat holes when the city would just save a whole lot of money getting these people into aparments they don't.

Shelters are dangerous unclean disease ridden places.

Pouring money and resources into institutions is not going to solve the problem since most of these people need regular housing and assistance. Few need total committment.

It's the same story with the elderly they pour tons of money into the upkeep of hell hole nursing homes that commit elderly people rather than spending a fraction of the cost to just hire an attendant to take care of them at home.

Charles Manson made a good point when he said jail beats the old age home anytime because after spending time in any of those other overcrowed (they always will be as long as there is a financial incentive to admit more people) ""fine "help" facilities"" you will probably become legitimately insane.

Take care of all these other correctable issues and there should be more than enough money left over to house the few that have SEVERE mental health issues.

Resorting to full scale warehousing is not a step in the right direction for a freedom oriented democracy.

In the aftermath of tragedies like Charleston or Sandy Hook, Americans hear the shared characteristics of the shooters: typically they are young males who obtained a gun (duh), used drugs (legally or illegally), dropped out of school, and committed or planned suicide as the grand finale to their murders. But to focus on these characteristics is to focus arbitrarily on the 12 to 24 months before the shooting. It ignores the roots of the problem: the household.

The article goes on to discuss some of the more notable ill effects of fatherless households, including a possible connection to mass shootings.

White males may dominate the single shooter mass shooter category but other races do it too.

I think your average white guy mass shooter is probably depressed, feels ostricized by society and commits the shooting as a revenge on civil society as a whole. They probably have a not so serious criminal or mental health record and felt that they were personally slighted by society and the government. They feel that they left their mark. Type B, introverted, narcissistic, psuedo-intellect. The crime is not personal.

Hate to wade here but other races commit mass shootings too. Blacks, again in my opinion, commit mass homicide for different reasons. There usually is a personal connection to the victims. The crime is out of revenge or monetary reasons. Total type A, confident and deliberate.

All opinion, no facts to back it up talking out of my rear end. Could be wrong
but it makes sense to me.

Of course, anecdotes and statistics are different things. And in any case, I don't know that anyone has statistics on race and mass shootings. The Federalist article linked above does discuss (and link to) many statistics about the ills of fatherless households.

Table of mass killings 1982-2015 with a column noting race of killer. It's pretty easy to see that "virtually all mass murderers are white" is simply a myth. The race far outnumbering its portion of the population is "Asian", far under-represented is "Latino".

330,000,000 and counting. more nuts born every day, but still very few of them overall. we need to stop changing policies and behaviors based on every time a nut does something evil/violent/etc. we got this idea in the 60s, and it has virtually gutted our nation.

Some savvy folks saw this coming over 30 years ago when the last US mental institutions were being shuttered. In about 1982 i was a CO at the medium security prison in WV. The warden of the WV prison at Moundsville was an astute guy by name of Donald Bordenkircher. Bordenkircher had worked in corrections for decades. He put down a riot at San Quentin by renting a D-9 Cat and personally destroying the trades building where the riot was in full swing. He had also ran the US POW camp in Vietnam.

At a training class Bordenkircher warned us about violent mental cases in our institution. He made this statement: "They take a violent mental case, thorazine his @##, call him a behavorial case and chunk him into prison".

Nancy Lanza knew that her son had serious mental problems. Buying a mental case a gun and teaching him to shoot is the wrong answer.

Yep, the vast majority of mass murderers in the US are white. By one account 78 percent of mass murderers who targeted schools were white. When is the last time a black public school student did a mass murder on school grounds?

Some of Dylann Roof's friends knew he had made threats but they declined to report him to authorities.

Remember as well that "mass killing" gets a lot of media attention. In poor, disadvantaged areas (urban or rural) there are probably a few individuals that have killed, over time, lots more folks than any of our mass murderers ever have (and what I'm talkng about is something that's likely to be on-going if not discovered somehow) - and in this area ethnicity only tells you who the victims were since they were highly likely to be the same race/ethnic background as the killer(s) since that's who our bad actors will have access to....

These kind of folks are deemed "serial killers" when they're found (or their victims are found) and a few of them can really roll up a score over time if they're not found out or even recognized if they're mobile.... No, this isn't the same sort of stuff that mass killings are about - but no less deadly. Once again, unlike the "white male" stereotype these kind of bad folks are likely to be found among almost any population - and you can believe there will be some females involved as well...
