I just had a conversation with an anti, who, unfortunately, holds a position of significant power in my area, and is incredibly anti-gun.

In fact, he just told me this evening that he wishes we were like England and had a total ban on guns; he wishes they didn't even exist.

But don't you guys worry;

"I'm a Republican!" he kept saying!

It all started when I asked him his opinion of the new .50 BMG ban and he said he is all for it, the AWB, etc, etc.

As we parted at the end of the evening, he told me not to buy a .50.

My response?

I just emailed someone who offered me one for sale to accept his offer and we are going to do a FTF transfer of my .50 BMG on Monday.

He wants television sets to be licensed and registered?

Well, if licensing and registration doesn't violate the Second Amendment, I guess it wouldn't violate the First, either.

Do I Need A License?

If you use or install television receiving equipment to receive or record television programme services you are required by law to have a valid TV Licence.

The type of licence you'll need and how to go about getting one will depend upon your individual circumstances.

To find out more, please select from the options on the left or call us with any questions on 0870 241 6468.

Detection and Penalties

Using television receiving equipment to receive or record broadcast television programmes without the correct licence is a criminal offence.
You could therefore face prosecution and a hefty fine of up to £1,000.

You may be asking yourself 'how will they know if I'm using a TV without a licence?' The answer is through a number of different methods.

At the heart of our operation is the TV Licensing database. It has details of over 26 million UK addresses.

Our officers have access to this computer system and a fleet of detector vans and hand-held detectors to track down and prosecute people who use a television without a licence. To find out how effective our methods are click here.

Each year it becomes easier to find and prosecute people breaking the law in this way.

So please be aware:

* Using a television without an appropriate licence is a criminal offence.
* Every day we catch an average of 1,200 people using a TV without a licence.

There is no valid excuse for using a television and not having a TV Licence, but some people still try - sometimes with the most ridiculous stories ever heard. To read some of our favourites click here.

TV Dealer Information

How TV Licensing affects Dealers
The Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967 (as amended) requires any dealer who sells or rents TV receiving equipment (whether the equipment is new or second-hand) to notify TV Licensing within 28 days of each transaction, giving full details of the buyer or renter.

Don't forget this also includes:

* Computers fitted with electronic broadcast cards (TV Cards).

* TV Cards themselves.

* Set-top boxes.

Failure to do so may mean a £1,000 fine per offence for you, or any store manager employed by your company.

August 2000 was the first time a major retailer was prosecuted under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967. One of its outlets was fined a total of £2,500 including costs for not passing on details of six customers who had purchased television sets. More recently in October 2000, a second major retailer was found guilty of five such offences and fined over £2,000 including costs.

If you have not registered with TV Licensing and you sell TV equipment then call 0870 240 1293 or fax us on 0870 240 1706 or simply click here, print and complete the form and post it back to us.

Personal information that you provide with your registration will only be used by the TV Licensing Authority (BBC and its service providers) to help administer the TV Licence system, including licence applications, fee collection and enforcement. Your personal information will not be provided to anyone else unless we are obliged by law to do so. If you wish to see our Privacy Policy, click here.

You HAVE to be joking!!!

Aggie~Cola should be along to clear this up!

I just simply cant accept this unless it resulted in their streets being safer or it was implicated with the Dunblane (sp?) Massacre.

Didn't Ayn Rand refer to the "People's State of Britain" in "Atlas Shrugged?"

I think it would be fun to try that here. Just to spin up the ACLU. Tell them it's just like guns, they'll say TV's aren't deadly weapons, tell them to watch "Grosse Pointe Blank." It would be fun.

Random outburst while circling the drain.

England has always had the TV license and tax. Its what pays for the BBC.

What part of the country was this so called Republican from? New Jersey?

"I'm a Republican!" he kept saying!
that's a perfect example of why people need to realize that gun grabbers aren't just Democrats. On another board where I'm frequently involved in discussion (they're more like arguments) about gun control, most of the otherwise sensible conservatives are all for gun control; one has even talked about how he wished "the idiotic things were never invented." In contrast, a lot of the liberals are completely against gun control. The only liberals who are for gun control seem to be in-line ideologically with the quasi-socialists on DU.

True Nico, as you and I have seen this past year in Maryland with Democratic Senators Gianetti and Jimeno voting NO to the proposed state AWB.

The problem is that the KEY leadership in the Democratic party is rabbidly anti-gun; they have to be so they can continue taking money from their big donors.

Guessing you got as excited as i did listening to a dem saying that he believed we should have guns and the AWB was a sham...

was odd hearing it from a guy w/ a 'D' next to his name.

Also - brittain had a TV Tax as they called it when i was stationed there - don't know how long before i was there they had it - but no one acted like it was wierd - so its prolly been there for some time.

Ostensibly it is so that the BBC doesn't have to sell advertisments during thier shows. And while thier shows had dramatically less adverts than we have here in the states... they DID have advertising.

Note that channels 3 and 4 (BBC1 and BBC2 were 1 and 2) had adverts out the butt. Shame you can't "disable" the TV from recieving channels 1 and 2 and still own a TV there. (say getting SKY (UK/Europes version of DTV or DISH))

Yes they did have lil trucks rolling around and if they detected a TV in operation (much the same way radar detector detectors work) in a house that was not in the database - then they would/could fine you. The CO of our base wouldn't let them on the base at all.... told em to piss off. Get this - you'd think your TV license would be a flat rate right? Nope - you don't have to pay as much for a 13" black and white as you do a 27" color TV. (hate to think what they'd charge us for our 70"er in the living room)

Lived on the economy for about a year - never had anyone knock at my door - but guess they could have.

Brittain is all about taxes. Having lived there for a year they do a number of strange things - like billing your utilities every 3 months instead of every month, most places only pay you once a month, they tax everything and its mother and before you are done you have gone through 50% or better of your paycheck in taxes. Never mind the wonderful (socialist) healthcare system that made an appoint ment to LOOK at one of our marine's knee's six months after the incident. (look - not surgery whatever, LOOK at it) the 17.5% VAT (VALUE added tax) on very nearly ANYthing you can buy doesn't help much either.

Did i mention the yearly examination of your car for any lil thing that might be on the ever growing list that "needs" fixed in order to get yer registration renewed? I know we have safety inspections... but for the ONE time i had to get my car inspected it cost me 400 pounds (about 600 dollars) to do body work for minor rust on the kick panel and some other minor things. At the time this car was about 5 years old... maybe 6. State sponsored fleecing you ask me as its in the best interest of the shop to find everything they might "have to do" (to make money) since everything is about expensive there. My gf/ex-fiance made about 700 (~$1050) pounds a month... and that was considered quite good job wise. (mind all approx calculations are based on $1.50 to 1 pound conversion rate - that was the lowest it ever got - and it got as high as 1.65 to one pound. rate varies per day)

No i dont' think i want to be like brittain. Was a great place to be stationed for those two years(the people were awesome) - but had i been a ... immigrant - i'd have come back here - which is precisely what a lot of brits do - while on the other side - there are a lot of pakistani, and other european immigrants to brittain... hmmm interesting.

Later dayz
J/Tharg!

The UK TV License is also Required to Own a Computer, Camcorder or Video Projector.
(Its in the Fine Print & Buried on the Website)

Now how exactly is taxing for use of BBC's TV broadcasts on devices that cant receive the signal makes any sense baffles me.

Also, they used to have a Radio license required many years ago to own a radio, which is rumored that some MP is trying to bring back.:barf:
