I have a friend who is becoming a cop and hes very sure of himself, granted i have nothing against the police what-so-ever. I just want to settle one thing for sure.

I am looking to get a Russian SKS for my first rifle. and he says it is illegal in the state of California, however i hear just the opposite.

he points out that the bayonet make the rifle a assault weapon

anyone willing to clarify?

well i am not looking to change it in any way, just a stock 10 round mag. WITH the bayonet for bayonet charges, and yes, i am bringing them back

I've never been to the board, but calguns.net could probably be your dream come true as far as getting the legal, Cali specific information you're wanting. There are a bunch of good guys from Cali on here too, so hopefully you'll get your answer soon and welcome to THR!

ETA: Ouch. This is my sixhundred, sixty sixth post on THR. Hope I don't get jinxed or anything! :p

oh hay would you look at that it is...hmm, this does note bode well for our hero.

thank you though

An unmodified Russian SKS is CA legal.
A Russian SKS is also classified as a C&R firearm and is over 50 years old, so if bought through a private party, you can legally cash & carry it.

Bayonets have nothing to do with CA assault weapon laws.

SKS with detachable magazines are considered assault weapons in CA.
So, long as the SKS does not accept detachable magazines, it is good to go.

Russian SKS with blade bayonet: Good
Chinese SKS with spike bayonet: Bad
Chinese SKS with bayonet removed: Good (must be a lot of drive-by bayonetings)
Yugoslavian SKS with grenade launcher: Bad
Yugoslavian SKS w/pipe welded over grenade launcher threads: Good (must be a lot of drive-by g...never mind)

No detachable magazines. Leave it stock.
No aftermarket parts, otherwise playing 922(r) game--though how California gets to modify the Yugo GL with a pipe, and still legally sell...guess you'd have to ask them.

All SKS in CA are good to go with bayonets. Even the Chinese.

The Yugo 59/66 needs the grenade launcher removed in order to be CA legal.
However, since the YUgo 59/66 is a SKS type rifle and not considered an actual SKS. You can have detachable magazines with it (922r parts compliance required).

Yup, CT blows with the crappy, crumbling infrastructure, HIGH taxes, corrupt politicians, HIGH cost of living, HIGH energy costs, bad weather/snow etc. Aside from CT not being as "bad" as some other northern states regarding firearms, CT can be flushed down the toilet for all I care. :fire:

Here's come CT "wisdom" for y'all. The AK in 7.62 is completely banned in semi-auto unless it was registered a long time ago during a very short window, yet you can legally own a select fire (full auto) one if you're a Class III person. You can also own an SKS (7.62) converted to take AK magazines and that's perfectly legal, too. I actually had my town police officer that did my fingerprinting tell me to take up golf or tennis instead of firearms as a "hobby" because he felt they were dangerous.
