That’s the problem with statistics, something like 86.23% are made up on the spot. :)

The rest we have no idea how they were gathered or “classed”. Kind of like someone that died in a car crash being counted as a Covid death…

It comes with the territory when you politicize “science”.

What constitutes a "Mass Shooting"? I feel like the popular definition of that phrase, popular with the anti-gun crowd, has been altered to fit a narrative. I'll stop there.

When I took it in college I remember the professor saying you can make statistics say anything you want. You just need to adjust your sample size.

I think that’s why I have always liked them as well as where my skepticism of them comes from.

No reason to stop there. Go ahead and include all the the exclusionary non-mass shootings the pro-gun crowd doesn't want to count that has been altered to fit their narrative.

an interesting corollary study would be the number of persons who commit armed felonies who are also ccw permit holders. or who also hold membership in the nra, goa or state firearms organizations for that matter. no need really, we can pretty much guess that the number approaches zero.

Really, given the low threshold for what, academically, "counts" as a "mass shooting, that will make that number larger than it might be in popular perception.
If that number is larger, the potential number of interactions with armed citizens is equally higher in proportion.

If the academic "definition" were 8 instead of 4 fatalities, the numbers would drop precipitously. (From potentially faulty memory, going from 4 to 8 reduces the total count by more than 80%.)
