Imagine that through some miracle, Congress and the President pass a gun law which applies national civilian gun laws to Law Enforcement and the Military. Think of this as leveling the playing field. The implications of this are as follows:
#1: They has to get rid of any automatic weapons they have which were not yet issued by the time the MG registry was closed.
#2: All grenades, bombs, missiles, and cannons must be registered as destructive devices.
#3: All SBR's and SBS's must be registered with the ATF.
#4: Police must follow their state's laws about carrying weapons and employment of force.
#5: The military may no longer have any guided missiles.
#6: Whenever an officer or a military unit move between states, they must notify the ATF.
#7: Certain foreign weapons models may no longer be imported.
#8: In certain states, only one handgun per month per unit may be purchased.
#9: All state laws regarding banned weapons must be followed.
#10: Arms can not be carried in certain areas.

How do you think the nation would react? Would it change how people view the state of RKBA in the country? What are your thoughts?

Sadly the majority of "just plain folks" believe that LE are better trained and more psychologically "stable" so they can be trusted more with guns than other "just plain folks". It may or may not be true, but you won't convince most people otherwise. The military argument is different, that one doesn't really make as much sense.

It's an interesting discussion, but moved to General since it doesn't have any actual real Legal content.

Fortunately, that perception is beginning to change as well thanks to the advent of cellphone cameras and audio recorders and YouTube. :D

I'm not sure the nation would have much time to react, as we would have stripped ourselves of our military super-power status and in doing so will have invited a lot of international "attention" that we didn't necessarily contend with beforehand.

I can see it now. A modern day Admiral Yamamoto quote - "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping chiwawa."

:neener:

I have to disagree. Now folks are just more inclined to think everyone is an irresponsible half wit.

Alot of police are barely educated about their own firearms. I asked what generation a cop's glock was and he was like "I dunno, its just a regular old Glock."

It was a gen 3 and I think a guy required to carry one every day should know more about them than me. Plus he said he only shoots it when he's required by the department to. It does not inspire confidence.

11. Instead of shooting bullets, guns fire miniature marshmallows.

You know, I still stand by the fact that my paintball gun shooting reballs (rubber paintballs) at 400fps, and 20 balls per second out of a 400-round hopper would stop anyone in my house lol.

Not quite the same as a 12 gauge, but not nearly as much cleanup...

One of two things would happen:

1) The law would be toothless and thus ignored. There might be a perfunctory test case to prove it thus, but one way or another it would go and join the long ranks of laws that are "on the books" but more or less completely ignored.

2) The law would pass on crazy day and there would be a serious attempt to enforce it. Epic hissy fits and turf battles.
