Man Arrested In Old-Time Pioneer Outfit With Arsenal

ST. LOUIS -- Police have nabbed a man dressed like an old-time pioneer who says he was headed to South Dakota with Bibles and "supplies" for American Indian children.

They say John Hill's supplies included quite an arsenal. They say there were loaded pistols, 400 rounds of ammunition and an assault rifle with a 30-round clip and a bullet in the chamber. A double-edged knife with an eight-inch blade was in the sun visor above the man's head.

Deputies searched the vehicle parked along Interstate 70, after they noticed a smell of marijuana. They found an array of drugs as well.

Hill says it was all for self-protection and that it's dangerous in the west. He was shirtless with military-style boots and an American Indian vest.

He's been charged with possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated. Authorities say more charges are likely.

How stupid is it to park on the interstate to smoke pot? I don't support most drug laws, but this guy was just asking for some instant karma to slap him in the face. I wonder what else he had in his "array of drugs," whether it was hard drugs or Sudafed or something.

As the officer, I would have been suspicious too! I mean, what possible reason could he have for wanting 400 rounds of ammunition in his vehicle?

That much wouldn't last more than an hour or two at the range! Heck, I carry that much with me just in bare lead 9mm, for the one range I go to that won't let you shoot jacketed bullets. 400 rounds, indeed. Clearly, the guy was up to something.

The only surprise is that the article didn't mention that this guy must live in a "compound." After all, isn't that where guys owning "arsenals" always live? Even if it's just an old trailer, a shed and a small barn on a two-and-a-half acre dirt lot partially surrounded by a broken-down fence ... And gee, when the "arsenal" word is used, I always half-expect to hear about the dude's wacky religious and political beliefs as well.

I don't think that anyone is commenting on the acts of the "authorities" in this situation - more the way that the media characterizes firearms in stories.

It is, but it is also a collection of weapons, so I guess this was an arsenal. To me, an arsenal conjures up images of racks upon racks of various guns (like in the Matrix).

I'm not justifying the man or his actions. I just wonder how broadly that charge can be applied.

I guess I'd be up the proverbial creek sans paddle if they came to my house. Heck, I've got 3 handguns, a shotgun and somewhere north of 100 rounds of ammo just in my bedroom. Then, if they went into the basement, I'd really be all over the front pages!

Heck, I routinely take a dozen or so guns to the range at a time (you never know what I might be inclined to shoot), along with the ammo and necessary mags. Heck, they'd probably just label me a whacko terrorist and get it over with.
