Another Broward Deputy Shot

I'm glad to see Florida LEOs are so intent on catching murderers...

Oh wait, it's only when their own is killed...

While I'm sure cries of "cop bashing" will be incoming any moment, I doubt that helicopters would be deployed for searches if any regular person had been murdered like this. But this thread may not the time or place for such a discussion.
I don't know about these comments. They don't seem to be shy about flying the helicopters around here, even at night, with searchlights if they want somebody, even if he's not a cop killer. My wife and I rode our bikes thru a developement just west of us, and they had several police cruisers and a helicopter at standoff distance for a drug bust.
One thing is for certain. "Joe Citizen" is important, but the extra effort put into this event is to send a message to the badguys. You better not mess with the police. Period. The Gang bangers need to respect the police and fear them. It's as much as a turf war as anything.
The sheriff said it best “This community, the law enforcement community, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, is not going to tolerate thugs in this community that think or imagine that they can assassinate our deputies," said BSO Sheriff Ken Jenne
Just wanted to add something else: A guy I worked with was murdered execution style with his friend recently behind Target. The police seemed to devote a lot of resources to the investigation. They didn't just blow it off. The cops are fighting a war against these gangs and need all the support we can give them.
I'll climb off the soap box now.

Jkwas- well said neighbor. LEOs are people, too, so there's good and bad ones, but the majority are guys trying to do their best at a thankless job.

ehh.... let's not get into cop bashing here folks. It's never a good turn for a thread.

Also, I can attest to the fact that cops do respond to other murders.

As someone in Broward county, and who lived for the last 3 years in South Miami, I can attest to seeing plenty of active police activity.

I lived really close to where Bryan Pata was killed (for those who remember this incident) and I can tell you I saw for weeks lots of police and crime scene trucks. In fact I saw the trucks a month or two later doing another look around or something (or maybe it was unrelated).

Also, driving around, especially some bad areas, you can see helicopters and police vehicles looking for people.

as Black Adder LXX mentioned, there are some bad ones, but I get the impression the majority are just men or women during a thankless job.

They need our support.

Personally, I am thankful when they do good, but not so when they do "not good". I see cop driving down my street, I usually smile and wave at him/her.

I don't have a major issue with common human mistakes, or when something goes wrong that is outside of their control. They are not supermen or super chicks, and have all the normal human failings, so I expect mistakes on a regular basis. Its part of being human. Legitimate mistakes should be used as a learning tool, and maybe to weed out a few who just have bad judgment.

Misconduct and double standards are something else altogether, as is the not uncommon practice of actively helping a co-worker avoid justice.

We all need to learn to forget the cop mythology you learned from watching Adam-12 and Dragnet. It ain't that way, and never was. They are not all like the scum portrayed on The Shield either.

how can a citizen help the cops

I live close by that area.

I wonder if I could help and how
( I do not speak Spanish.. .but I can may be sit and observe stuff...)

I wish the police could ask for help and tell me what I can do for them.

It is correct, in my view, that part of police's protection is that the gangs must be afraid of them.. .this is very important.

I have heard locally there are instances that the gang members are not afraid especially of female police officers -- and if they get stopped by a female police officer -- they get on their cell phones and call in more of the gang members to come over (note: they are not even trying to run away)

What I noticed was both officers were wearing vests. Both were shot in the head. The vests just assures a head shot if you get hit and knocked down. Well...maybe not but...maybe. Still, if I had the choice, I'd wear the vest.

I have my own "Three Strikes Rule" I believe that if a person commits murder, rape, or other serious criminal bodily assaults, that the victim and their next of kin gets to grab a bat and give the perp THREE STRIKES! If the victims children are deemed too young to swing said bat with enough force, a designated steroid using hitter will be provided by the state at no cost!

Every courthouse should have a public "Batting Cage" out in front.

Zoogster,

Thanks for your unique insights. Those videos were insane. It sounded like you were saying that being more strict doesn't help. Did I get that right? What do you think should be done differently? I think the way prisons are run needs to be changed somehow so that the inmates really do have a chance to turn their lives around.

Having said that, I also think that even three strikes is too lenient. Personally, I think that if somebody uses a weapon to commit a crime, even if they don't pull the trigger or stab someone, they have shown their willingness to take somebody's life illegally and should therefore get life in prison or the death penalty.

I was talking to my brother about gun rights a while back and he informed me that in the days when the 2nd Amendment was written, people got the death penalty for crimes like theft. I think there is a very significant connection there. People need to know that if they are going to abuse the right to be armed, the punishment will be swift and severe. Otherwise they keep abusing that right and the next thing you know, people want to make the weapons illegal.

Maybe - just maybe - if they persued 'ordinary criminals' with such fervor there'd be less crime to worry about...

IMHO it is cop bashing because there are no facts presented that support that supposition. You would have to present data on similar murders (the cop was investigating suspicious cars, so find an ordinary joe doing the same who is murdered and the crime was known right away, not some found bloated body) and the response.
Otherwise it seems to be a bit of a biased statement.

Total lack of class there sport.

Just my opinion

I am glad this thread was started but think it should have been left at condolences not how everyone does everything wrong. I don't trust half the police in our area but what happened to this guy was wrong. Just my two cents.

I apologize for my comment, it seems you guys do things a bit different down there. Up here, it seems the helicopters are only sent out once in a blue moon, and it usually happens to be for things like this or BIG chases.

Today was the memorial, and a friend of mine got stuck in the traffic on their way in to the office and it was absolutely insane due to all the police. They had to meet in the arena that the Florida Panthers play in to fit all the LEOs.
