Another holster post (expensive)

Man it is expensive trying to find a comfortable way to carry concealed. I do not see how people afford some of the rigs they have.

I went out yesterday and bought three different options each for three of my four carry weapons.

The firearms are a...
Taurus 731 .32 H&R Mag
Walther PPK .380acp
Kahr MK40 .40 S&W (which I hope will arrive today or tomorrow).

The carry option I bought for each are...
Small of back belt holster
Strong hand belt slide holster
Inside the pants clip on holster

Now to spend this week trying different option and seeing what works. So far I have had zero luck finding a comfortable carry method that does not print and I just cannot bring myself to dress like someone that does not know their own size or shops at a goodwill bin.

Combination of Bianchi, Galco and Don Hume. Stores do not really carry a big selection around here.

Belt slides are two Don humes and one bianchi
Small of back ones are two Don Humes and one Galco
Inside pants ones are Don Hume and Galco
 
I carry a J-frame, so that could influence my thinking, but I've stopped caring about printing. I just don't think people pay that much attention to it. If they see a bulge, they won't assume its a gun, so I don't worry. I carry OWB and wear t-shirts, pullover golf shirts and button up shirts, all my size. My only concern is making sure the shirts are long enough to cover the bottom of the holster. If so, I'm good to go.

No wonder its expensive. You just bought 9 holsters? Wow. I might have limited it to just one of those pistols.

I don't know what you just dropped on that purchase, but I imagine its less than what I have invested in my entire system of belt, and Sparks holster + pouches for my Commander and 6P.


I just don't worry about that printing issue. There are numerous ways maintaining obscuity and diverting attention. Clothing is just one of many.
 
last night I wore cotton shorts with my IWB holster which I usually wear at 1:30 but it moved to about 12:30 while I was getting in and out of the car. It was comfortable so I didn't bother sliding it back. I went into the local drug store to by some Halls and I noticed the cashier looking towards my crotch. When I left the store I looked down and noticed the barrel was pushing my shorts out. The cashier was probably thinking she was going to get robbed or that she looked really good last night:D
 
After trying many of the same, except for small of back. I settled on pocket carry of my .38 j frame. Rt front everyday.

I never thought of that. That might actually be a good side effect of carrying in the front. Would make me more popular when we went out. I wonder if I could fit my .44mag Super Blackhawk in the front of my pants?

IWB Don Hume

I just got a Don Hume 715 IWB holster for my S&W 908. I find it a comfortable fit for myself and it is a well made holster for the money.

By the way, where can I get a Kahr in .40 ACP? ;)

Don't take offensive at me either when I say, if you are more concerned about dressing to express a statement about yourself and maintain an image, then you're going to have to live with that, and the impact it has on carrying your gun.


Carrying a concealed firearm about society on a daily basis is inconvenient, and unless viewed as a system that includes your selection of clothing, IS tough to accomplish.

We can always stick a J frame in our pocket and consider ourselves armed. I've done it when I had little options, but I didn't like it, and considered it an undesireable compromise. I don't conduct the majority of my firearms training with a J frame. I did at the point I carried it to be proficient, but I prefer to have what I train with on me. So, I made the decisions necessary to make that possible. That included my manner of dress.

I wear it at 3:00 or 4:00. I slide it around to 4:00 if I am going to be doing a lot of sitting. Saves on wear and tear on my spare tire. :)

Nice thing about the Don Hume is that they are made to fit your model of gun. It's not just a generic gun holdin' leather sock.

I am looking for a holster myself. I just made my first internet purchase..a S&W 637 with 1-7/8th" barrel. The classic snubby I've wanted since watching "Boston Blackie" in the '50's. Way before your time. It left a lasting impression on a 5 year old boy.

I'm hooked like a trout..the transaction was so easy.. headed for the poor house for sure!

As Slinger mentioned, I have heard very good things about Don Hume. I'll be looking for a new IWB for my new baby and will give them every consideration.

I've always had a difficult time finding an IWB that I could wear for extended periods. The Bianchi Model 6 works well for me with small revolver.

I recently picked up a Don Hume 721 OT for my XD SC.

This one is quickly becoming my favorite. It rides a little higher and closer to my side than the JIT Slide that Don Hume makes. An untucked t-shirt or flannel shirt covers it well (but the 'cool factor' stopped being a concern for me years ago.) I'll probably get another one of these for my SP101.
 
Probably not what you want to hear, but I've found that with holster comfort spending more usually does get you a more comfortable holster. From a functional standpoint my Don Hume IWB Clip for my Makarov works great, but my HBE Pro-IWB is just so much more comfortable. Same with my Milt Sparks gear.
 
One piece of advice I might offer is to minimize the number of guns that you carry. I only carry a Glock 23 and a Glock 27. I sometimes carry a 4" 1911, but that's pretty rare. If I wanted to carry more guns, that's a lot of money on holsters.
 
Any suggestions for both an IWB and OWB for a Smith 637 "J" frame..1-7/8th" barrel? I have my new beauty but no means of carry other than in a jacket pocket, which I'm relunctant to do because of the trigger.

I would be grateful for any you've had actual experience with. I live in San Antonio, on the off chance there might be a retailer here you might have delt with.

I have a Model 60 in .357mag. I find it to be awkward IWB (as are most revolvers to me) due to the width of the cylinder, and the difference in width between the cylinder and the frame. If I was going to carry something OWB, it would be a full-sized gun with more capacity. Over the years, I've acquired quite a few guns that I had developed a hankering for, but I've come to the realization that some of my favorite guns aren't the best for carry (for me.)

Having said that, I have carried my Model 60 in a pocket holster, in a small-of-back holster, and two in-the-pants holsters (Thunderwear, and a deep holster that held the entire gun below my belt.)

I haven't dealt with any dealer in SA that I can remember, but even locally, I prefer to get what I want from the internet.
