I'm in Ft. Lauderdale for Family Mediation Certification training. I've got three folks in my class from around my town, close enough to meet me at the range. They are all from New York City, really nice folks.

In having prided myself on being a well-informed pro-2ndAmendment citizen I had a large resource of information to be able to inform them with. They didn't even know that you didn't need a license first in order to own a gun in Florida, and they have lived here at least eight years. After a couple of lunch breaks explaining statistics, facts, and the realty of gun ownership here in Florida, we have a range meet scheduled for next weekend when all three of us are in town. I'll try to get pics if they'll consent.

Of course I'm the only Florida native in my class, the teacher is a nice elderly (the kind of guy you might imagine Socrates looked like) gentlemen who was an FBI agent for twenty plus years before becoming an attorney and Mediator of many fields. When I asked as when I was acting in the role of a mediator and was mediating in a place where I could legally carry as a private individual, could I carry as a mediator? Unfortunately he couldn't give me a straight answer, I think it was the first time he ever got the question, and he of course asked me if I knew how to shoot. He playfully chided me a couple of times more over the class that day and let it go.

Unfortunately some of my classmates remarked, "why would you ever need to carry," well go figure when the topics of children, money, and homes come up, you sometimes get folks who just snap. It's an incredibly uncommon thing but it does happen and before I had asked the question (actually the reason for it) he relayed two stories of folks at the mediation going nuts and killing folks at the mediation. His answer was know where the door was (exit), get as close to it as possible, and know which way the door opens.

So okay not to be a chicken-little, but if lighting happens to strike the same person that day twice, and lets say someone who is starting to realize(or possibly incorrectly under the wrong impression) that everything they ever worked for, that they won't be able to see their children but every other weekend, and that someone else might be living in their house, sleeping with their former wife or husband, and possibly raising their children, just saying that someone can snap. I'd like to be able to have a viable say in whether or not I'm being shot to death or have others not being killed around me. And, you can always get shot in the back when you are running away.
