i got my hopes up for the cleveland walmart but when i got closer i saw the only guns in the case were pellet guns. still got ammo but good luck getting someone to hand it to you!

I'm in Harris County, TX - about 40 miles from downtown Houston. My local Wally World (<3 miles) stopped carrying guns...oh, a year or so ago. Still carries ammo, though...for now. A lady there told me to buy as much as I could and call the Wal-Mart -800 number and URGE them to allow the local store to keep carrying ammunition and reconsider guns, too.
In a nearby town (10 miles or so) away, they still carry guns, although trying to get decent service is tough. I've priced a few guns over there, and they are almost always less expensive. In those cases where they weren't cheaper, by the time I figured in my drive time & gas, it was a wash.
However, while no great Wal-mart fan, in small towns, Walmart is the mall, grocery store, newsstand, barbershop, and bank all in one - as well as the local sporting goods store. IF they don't carry it, it's likely going to be difficult - or expensive - to find. While I like an elusive internet hunt for a particular item as much as anyone
being able to do one-stop-shop for food, gas, and ammo is great with me.
FWIW, I'm equidistant from two Academy stores. One carries the full range of guns (handguns & long gns) and ammo. The other, only select ammo. I was told it's because of the part of town store #2 is in. They didn't want to chance break-ins and loss of firearms. I know the logic could apply to ammo, but I'll take what I can get, ya know?

I've only seen one Wally World around here drop guns, and it was in the town that had the least competition from any other gun stores! The one pawn shop in town was thrilled.
That Walmart was a regular store, they are building a new Supercenter by it now. It'll be interesting to see if they bring back guns to it.

First, let me say that I often shop at Walmart - just not for everything under the sun.
The Walmart here in Grapevine, Texas (DFW area) stopped selling firearms about 7 or 8 months ago. They still sell ammunition, although it is not a very big selection. Echoing what someone else said, I found that the local Walmart folks who were tending the firearms department did not seem to be specialists in the field or know very much about their products. The guys selling tires over in the automotive department knew more about automotive products than the gun counter guys knew about guns.
Although I generally subscribe to the notion that it is better to have more gun dealers than fewer, both the buying and selling of guns come with a certain amount of responsibility. Guns and stupid don't mix. A qualified gun seller will not only be familiar with his products, but he will also be better able to help the customer pick the right firearm for their stated purpose if the customer is inexperienced. Many firearm purchases are "first and only" gun buys. It is important to the shooting sports and to the preservation of gun rights that the buyers have a positive experience and are happy with their purchase. In that light, I think it is almost better that Walmart abandon gun sales rather than to continue to staff their gun counters with incompetents.
Here in Grapevine, there is an Academy store right across the highway from the Walmart, and the folks manning the gun counter there seem to be much more enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their products. In my own case, it doesn't matter much, because I much prefer to give my business to smaller gun stores. I prefer the environment and good fellowship found in gun shops, and I never fail to learn something valuable that helps me in my pursuit of getting better behind a rifle. And if price is a concern, one can always go to some place like Sportsman's Warehouse, Bass Pro, or Cabela's. Even so, the prices in these places doesn't seem to be that much less expensive than the prices in the local small gun stores in my area.
If you live in the DFW area, I highly recommend Euless Guns & Ammo. They are a bunch of very knowledgeable and friendly guys, and they have a decent selection, including their own line of ELA custom made rifles.

they stopped selling in arizona for awhile, but brought it all back (due to public outcry?). didnt bother me none cause i got big 5!

Walmart in Elko carries arms and ammo. So does the CVS Pharmacy.

No wally gun sales at all in CA anymore. your lucky if youre wally even sells ammo. in Alameda county (which includes both oak-town my nizzle and 30 miles away, almost rural Livermore where you can actually still hunt if you know the land owner) no ammo sales at all.
no problem so i drive the 25 miles down to wally in santa clara county, as i was stopping to see my folks anyway... nobody speaks engrish but they have Federal shotshells on clearance for $1 a box. i bought all 50 boxes mostly for 20Ga which i dont own yet, but the guy was stocking a new shipment of all the other ammo so unless they want to fire sale WW 100 rd white box for $2 a box it looks like they will sell ammo for a while.

About a month ago, a relative of mine was in the Wal-Mart in
Fairlawn. He was doing some shopping while open carrying his weapon.
After being in the store for a little while, he was confronted by the
assistant store manager, Jim Hancock, who told him that he was
breaking the law by carrying his firearm, and asked him to remove it
in the store and let him take it. When my relative said no, the
manager told him that he could either go with him to the office and
"straighten this out" or be prosecuted.
He said, "OK," not knowing what he was going to be prosecuted for.
When they got to the back of the store, the assistant manager then
called the Pulaski Sheriff's Department and put the deputy on speaker
phone and asked what my relative could be charged with. When the
deputy told him that there was no law being broken, he then hung up
and started telling my relative that "things were going to change
when the next president was elected...and people like my relative
were going to lose their rights to carry weapons."
When my relative wanted to leave, he was told that he had to write a
report. After the report was written and signed, he then told him to
leave the property. There were witnesses to this. After I talked with
Dave Knight about this, he called and talked with the store manager
who told him that her store employees would "be educated" and that
they weren't to bother anyone carrying a weapon in the store.
Well, last night (August 28, 2007) I was in the same store to
purchase some ammo for a CCW class that I was teaching. I was in the
store with a friend of mine. We walked straight from the front door
to the sporting goods department (open carrying). After standing at
the counter with no help for a few minutes we were confronted by the
SAME assistant manager and another employee.
Mr. Hancock told us that we were not welcome in the store while
carrying a weapon and he wanted us OFF THE PROPERTY NOW. I asked him
if this was store policy or his policy. He said it didn't matter, and
that if we did not leave, we would be charged with trespassing.
We turned to walk out of the store and Mr. Hancock followed us on our
heels all the way out. I stopped at one point to ask him why he was
following us. After we left I made a call to the district supervisor,
Terry Sartain, and left a message at his office because it was after
hours. I spoke with Mr. Sartain this morning and he told me that the
local managers and he were working on a new firearms policy.
He said that they had cleared it with the home office and the legal
department and that they were OK to change the policy in his store to
NO FIREARMS...NO CONCEALED OR OPEN CARRY!! He said that the signs
were being printed and would be posted in a couple of days.
The stores affected by this change are Fairlawn, Christiansburg, and
Salem, with Roanoke stores to follow. So, it looks like Wal-Mart is
falling. What do we do about this, or is there anything that we can
do?
(Update: I just spoke with someone at corporate and was told by them
that the new Wal-Mart corporate policy on firearms is to let district
managers decide on the firearms policy for their stores. It is in
their hands and out of corporate.)

I know, no hate. How nice, Chinamart runs local shops out of business, then stops selling items the shops they ran out of business specialized in. IMO, Chinamart and the retarded American public have helped lead to the insecurity of Americas ability to gear up in the event of another WW. I get upset when I think of all the factories that have shut down because of the desire for the public to save a few cents on any particular product. Been to a Chinamart lately? Only thing I know that is falling is Americas abilty to retain jobs, because of the retarded consumer.
1) I can't help that the local gunshops around here don't believe in realistic pricing on guns, ammo, and accessories.
2) I can't help that labor agreements, government over-regulation, and the American workers' laziness and greediness for handouts forced manufacturing oversees.
3) I can't help that Walmart decides not to sell stuff where it is not wanted- i.e. hunting stuff in a big city.
Basically, you are saying that people, like me, who shop at Wallyworld are idiots. I can tell you this- I ain't shopping at the "local mom-and-pop" store, where they see fit to charge $20-25 for a box of ammo that costs $9.27 at Walmart. There is no excuse for doubling the price. That's not "giving in to Chinamart to save a few pennies"- that's common sense.

whats the price of REM870 express[$239 walmart]mossberg 500[$149]and these are vent rib.whats the price in gun shop.most shops I'v been in lately are if not unfriendly are chilly.a lot of things I have bought are made in china.
tools are damn good and cheap.and frankly most of you think your buying american when your not.most all scopes have Japanese lens,a lot are assembled in Japan or China.some high grade shotguns are made in Japan.look at the winchester take offs 93/86/shotguns.when your getting
$900 a month on SS,you get what you can where ever you can. if the small gun store sell at a fair price and give you what you want it will survive.my friend wanted a double over under combo.Ireccomended a dealer.he went to local gun store an ordered it.$249 when it came he was charged $400.dealer wanted $17 for 10 rds ammo.I asked where free box was dealer said was none.called distribeter he sent it with gun.$8.95 box.needless to say that dealer was a thief.
