Any 336 gurus out there

I picked up an interesting 336 today. It's interesting because the manufacture date is 1968 and the first 2 digits in the serial are 68. All the books say that in 1968 it should still be a letter code of AD.

The gun looks great except for one rather unfortunate spot where the owner left it sitting in a passes case untouched for 20 years.

First, any info on this gun would be appreciated.
Second, how should I attack this bad area?

The 68 digits are from the last three months of 1968.

Rem Oil spray and steel wool would fix that spot up pretty good. You'll still be able to tell where it was, but heck, it'll add character!

You rifle is a 336C, the flagship of the line. Walnut furniture, gold trigger, nice rifle.

I started sanding the rust spots last night and got down to bare metal. There is obviously some pitting. Before I reblue I need to decide if there is any way to fill in the pitting or should I just blue over it.... anyone?

In 1968, these beauties sold for less than $100. I bought my Glenfield 30-30 in 1979 for $129. American currency has de-valued quite a bit since then.
