Any help with what choke this thing takes?

So, I posted what I thought was a good buy yesterday. I picked up an 870 Wingmaster magnum, and love the gun.
It came with a .640 choke tube, so I knew I needed to go pick up a couple of more practical chokes.

I go to Bass Pro this afternoon and get 2 of their brand chokes, one in modified and one x-full, which is .690. On the box it said, "fits most 12 gauge Remington shotguns."
I get home, remove the choke and go to screw in one of the new ones and it won't even begin to go into the barrel. Upon inspection, the threads are visibly finer on the on it came with than the new ones.

I missed something when I bought it. The barrel says "full" but it has interchangeable chokes. So I guess someone had their barrel modified to take choke tubes. And God only knows which ones it takes.

I'm beyond frustrated. Is there an easy way to see what kind I need? Or just try dozens of different ones until I find one that fits?

Please help.

I'd take the barrel and try chokes. You may find some used guns on the rack that they will let you test fit with.

How far down are the threads from the crown? A member here might be able to make an ID that way. I have 3 different kinds of chokes to compare to.

There are really only two that are common.

Win/Mossberg/Browning Invector
Rem Choke

Then you get into more proprietary ones like Browning Invector Plus and Benelli and Beretta whatchamacallits.

And all of the Beretta variations, Briley thin walls, Trulock's version like he makes for CSMC and then there is a one of a kind made by a gunsmith

Send it to Briley (the choke) and they can make you anything you want

Post a pic of the choke that came with it.

Any labels on it?

The only thing on the choke is "Lead shot only" and ".640".

Here are a couple of pics along side the new one that didn't fit.

Seems to be a little shallower than the Remington choke, if I'm looking at the correct thing.
Maybe the pics will help.

looks like Browning win etc to me.....but I know so little about shotguns it's almost criminal, so here's a picture of my citoris choke

Do you know if the Wingmaster was originally threaded for choke or if it was done in the aftermarket? If it was threaded for choke at the factory, it takes Remchokes. If the barrel was threaded subsequently, could be anything.

I'm almost certain it was aftermarket.
The barrel is marked "full" but it takes chokes.

I suspect I'm going to have to sent the choke to Briley. I hope not, but probably will.
That's how my luck goes. I think I'm getting a decent deal, and I'm probably going to have to spend an insane amount of money for standard chokes.

Well, before sending off to Briley, it's worth checking the obvious suspects if possible. Invector is very common. Do you know anyone locally that might have an Invector choke you could try?

I am assuming the Carlsons is the one you bought at Bass Pro since that is a large part of what they carry. The other choke appears to be a turkey type choke of severe construction. Often these will say lead shot only because the extreme constriction can cause steel shot (which does not deform as easily) to damage the choke or barrel.

This makes sense if you bought a Rem Choke because they are longer from muzzle to threads and a different thread pitch apparently. I think you have a Win Choke setup

I believe the first thing I’d do would be to call Carlson’s or Trulock. I’ve spoken to Mr. Trulock and Mr. Carlson over the phone and also a few times with other employees. Both companies have super knowledgeable people that will bend over backwards to help you. In fact the best firearms related companies I’ve ever done business with are Camera Land, Carlsons and Trulock. No one else comes close.
If that is a custom choke my money is on Mike Orlen or Briley.

Aftermarket installations use a different choke than factory installations. You are not likely to find a choke that fits at a store. The likely candidates are Briley, Carlsons, and maybe Tru lock. These companies generally have 2 different chokes each, a thin wall and a regular choke. You might find the specifications enough to identify the chokes on the websites of these companies. Or someone here might recognize it. But I do not think you are going to walk into a store and find one that fits. Spend some time looking at the companies websites. If I only had one choke I would be a little reluctant to send it to someone.

The fact that it is a Remington gun no longer matters. No body aftermarket threads for Rem chokes. You are looking for aftermarket chokes. Send the picture of the choke to the companies listed and see what they say. Maybe take a clear picture and measure the length of the choke and post a new thread here that says can anybody identify these aftermarket choke tubes. It looks like a Carlsons to me but that is offhand and my Carlsons chokes are 1000 miles away right now and for the short future.

Somebody does. I know cause I've threaded several 870's for Remington chokes. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

These are early Mossberg chokes. Mod on left with 1 line. Full on right , no line.
These early choke fit my old Brownings & the Browning fit Mossberg.

Length 1.5" Both 12 ga. 20200416_093917.jpg

Your chokes look longer & a newer type. 20200416_095526.jpg

There is writing on the silver colored one. It was bought at Cabela's and says "Cabelas" on one side and "Carlsons" on the other. That's the new choke.

The black one is the one in question. The only markings on it are "Lead shot only" and ".640".

I have Carlson chokes in different restrictions for my Winchesters, Mossberg and H&R shotguns that are all the same threads. A friend and I added screw in chokes to my 870 that is also the same chokes and he also had a reamer/threader that would do "thin wall" threads that was also different thread. I would go to a LGS and ask if you could compare your choke to some they have in stock, locally some have a box of loose extra chokes. If you find out what they are look on eBay, that is where I've purchased some specialty chokes reasonable.
