The Colibri stuff is great. Also, some reloading guys have had good luck with the rubber bullets fired only with the primer.
I think anything you do to the weapon to reduce the noise could get you into legal trouble.

You could make a little hutch that you stick your gun inside when you fire. As long as it isn't attached to the weapon in any way it doesn't count as a firearm silencer under the NFA.

Have a series of old car tires laid next to each other to make a tube. Fill the tires with sand, and pile sand around the tires. Stick the muzzle in one end of the tube, and have the target set out past the other end.

This is exactly why I think we should push for the deregulation of sound suppressors. After all, law mandates that you have a muffler on your car, motorcycle, and in some places even your lawn mower. It seems just downright silly and hypocritical that it's so difficult to put one on a firearm. It would solve so many problems:
1) Fewer people would have hearing damage incurred from shooting firearms with poor or no ear protection.
2) As urban sprawl continues to grow outward, many ranges are facing conflicts with their new neighbors about sound complaints.
Allowing sound suppressors to be freely bought and purchased on the open market with no more regulation than on any other harmless firearms accessory would go a long way towards solving these problems.
But there I go, making sense again...

Legally you could obtain the required paperwork, get the authorization from the chief LO in your county or state, which ever you are required to do, submit with all supporting documents, and wait until BAFT issues you a tax stamp that allows the transfer of a suppressor. Then contact one of the many class III dealers out there and get what you want. If you live in a state that doesn't allow them by state law become an activest and work to get the law changed, then do the above.

If you don’t want to buy a suppressor like I have, I recommend you look up cat’s sneeze rounds.
For music I recommend Cannibal Corpse or Napalm Death.

You don't mention what guns you are interesting in quieting down. With rifles and handloading, it is easy to make them very quiet. With handguns, about the only options have already been mentioned: .22s with CP caps or something like that, and wax or rubber bullets powered only by a primer.
If you can legally own a suppressor, you might be surprised at what they cost. They are not nearly as expensive as many people would lead you to believe. The "hoops" you have to jump through are not extensive. The only real big stumbling block is getting the CLEO signature. Here where I live, it is no big deal at all. The hardest part is catching him in the office for his signature: there is no hassle from him at all. The rest of the proceedure might take an hour counting driving time.
However, I realize it is not this easy for everyone and totally out of the quesiton for others.

I'm thinking about hunting guns, or home defense. Handguns or rifles. I just thought maybe there might be some simple device that is not a silencer, but something that would save your eardrums if you had to shoot without ear protection.
I handload several calibers, rifle and handgun. Favorite is 44mag. How do you quiet things down by handloading? Use the low-powder loads? Subsonics? Thanks. 44

Subsonic is a good start. Big heavy bullet to maintain some energy.
Ideally, get a legal silencer. Either by jumping through the hoops or getting the laws changed. The 1st being much easeir and the 2nd being preferable
I'm seriously consdering getting a Beowulf AR after the sunset with a collapsing stock and investing in a supressor for it as a replacement for my current HD gun. Load up some heavy sub-sonic rounds using .500 S&W bullets and viola! Lots of stopping power and safe for the ears and eyes.
Plus the factor would be sky high

I already told you, “Cat’s Sneeze†loads. Look them up! .44mag is the perfect round for them when fired out of a rifle.

What you can do, and it's pretty cool, is to have a closed action .22 rimfire rifle (bolt or lever action) with a 24 inch barrel and shoot cb caps. They run about 800 fps and will make less noise than an air rifle. I do it all the time at the country place. Can't hear nuttin.
