What does one have to do to be able to legally possess an any other weapon (AOW)? Does one have to give up certain freedoms like the ones that a person must give up in order to legally own a machine gun?
An AOW is a NFA weapon just like the machinegun. The entire process is the same except the transfer fee is $5 instead of $200 for a machinegun.
Beyond popular belief, having NFA or a C&R license does not allow ATF to search your house at anytime they desire without a warrant. For NFA weapons, they can ask to review your paperwork to ensure you're legal.
I have one, and didn't sign away any rights beyond:
- I have to let the gov't know where it is (address) if I move, take it out of state, or sell it
- the gov't can ask me for ownership papers at any time
Huh. Go figger. I knew that was the case with suppressors, but thought moving AOWs required permission.
Friggin' sucks that the law is so complicated that a point so simple can easily escape someone (like ME) who has poured over the relevant laws in an extraordinary attempt to remain compliant. :banghead: May SCOTUS resolve the 5th vs. 9th COA rulings soon...
