I'm headed for San Antonio for a couple of days and wanted to know if there were any must see firearms places in/near.

Enjoy the riverwalk and the Alamo. I had a good time at both places.

Food is good but expensive on the riverwalk.

Alot of nice places to consume alcoholic beverage on or near the riverwalk as well. There is a nice piano bar next to the Hard Rock Cafe but I cant remember the name.

As for gunshops, follow the link that jsalcedo posted.

If its still there on the River Walk, go to DICKS LAST RESORT. Its an unusual place. Then at the Quarry, or many locations in SA, there is JOES CRAB SHACK. Good Sea Food there and great Steaks.

Howling at the Moon is the panio bar. I enjoy it. Depends when you go. If you are in San Antonio around Valentines day the riverwalk will be packed due to an anual Music teachers convention. But that makes the trip to the panio bar more fun. (thats last time i went to Howlin with My girl while she was at said convention)

Just out of curiosity, why avoid Blackhawk?

Dury's gun shop opened in a brand new store/location a few months ago and is worth a look. They are located right off of I37 south (heading towards Corpus) and is pretty close to down town. Nagel's on San Pedro is a pretty good place to dig around for something if you're not looking for anything in particular but their not exactly cheap. Do you know what days you'll be in town and are you just looking to look or looking to shoot? There are plenty of club matches around. In what part of town will you be staying?

The piano bar is either Howl at the Moon (was it up stairs and have two pianos?) or Durty Nelly's is pretty close as well (down by the water with lots of peanuts on the floor).

also, if IIRC, there is a monthly gun show in SA, over by the ariport off of 410. There is also a good night club, actually 5 clubs in one called the Atrium there as well.

Blackhawk

The pistol range has all of the targets lined up next to the backstop.

If you want to shoot at 25 yards then you stand on a concrete sidewalk
(no station dividers) 25 yards from the target. The same goes for 15 yards and 7 yards.

I have been shooting at 7 yards (informed the range office) and they stick a 15 yard pistol shooter at the target next to me.

If the 15 yard shooter has a stray more than a foot off his bullet is going into my back.

Also when you go to check or change your target there is no ceasefire.
The shooters walk down a live firing line with bullets kicking up dirt
just a few feet away.

There are no tables or chairs (all have been obliterated by gunfire)

You must set your range bag and guns on the ground.

There are cats, dogs and cows wandering around with bullet scars, missing limbs etc..

Could be a nice place if they cleaned up their act. The only saving grace is the area set aside for competition.

Guess that adequately answers my question about Blawkhawk. I've shot several matches out there and liked the range but never used the target shooting areas so I didn't realize they had safety issues. Thanks for the heads up.
