Hello
I've been wanting to get another 6-6½" .357Mag revolver for a while and was contemplating a Ruger GP100 when I saw this Taurus 6½" 608 8-shot at my local Sportsman's Warehouse.
I gotta say, it's a sexy lookin thing.. Looks like it wants to be taken out and shot!

But.. I've been reading stuff on forums about Taurus and I gotta wonder.. should I.. There are a LOT of unhappy folks out there.. more than there should be I believe..

Now a lot of these threads were started a few years ago.. so 'maybe' Taurus has gotton better lately? Don't know..

Anyway just wondering if anyone has one of these that has been purchased recently?

Thanks

Wow..! .001 is way too tight.. I'll check this the next time I handle a 608.
Thanks.
I did a little research about this subject. I know what to look for now.:)

I have a 4 inch 608 and it is an excellent gun. Extremely accurate, and with the heft and ports, the recoil is practically non-existent. I recommend a through checkout of any revolver before you purchase and you will not be disappointed.

I have the 608 in a "four-inch" barrel. Actual barrel is less than 3 inches. I compared it with my S&W Model 60 three-incher and the S&W was harder hitting as measured by penetration. I dislike the ported barrel very much. I special ordered the gun and overlooked that item. But this is a very good revolver, smooth in DA, and does shoot .357s almost like a .22. I got it to shoot excess rounds I did not want to fire in the Model 60.

I had a 6.5".

Speedloaders, hard to find
Ports, ugly and dirty
Trigger, stiff and gritty
Finish, ugly
Barrel logo, HUGE
Hammer lock, ok
Grips, very few replacments, Grippers, too sticky to carry

I have a 608 with a 6 inch barrel. It's very accurate and the trigger is just fine. Brian, did you get the blued finish or the stainless? The blueing on my 608 is better than any modern S&W I've seen. Not that that's a tall hurdle to leap.

I would save my shekels and buy either the Ruger or a used Dan Wesson. I don't know what the Taurus sells for but a used Dan will go for under 400.00...a lot of people don't know how well they shoot and the short action is great once you get used to it.

How does that relate to the OP's post? BTW, what are the model numbers of the 8-shot Ruger and Dan Wessons?

Too big IMHO. I prefer my K frame sized 66s, one of Taurus's better revolvers, anyway. Good gun, I just don't think a .357 need be that big and heavy. I do have a Ruger Blackhawk to hunt with, though. I guess it depends on uses. And, of course, the smaller guns aren't 8 shooters if that matters to you.

Dallascj.....the op asked about 6 inch .357 revolvers or did I not read it right? The Dan is that caliber so is the Ruger. As far as I know the Ruger GP-100 he was contemplating has never been made with an eight shot cylinder but maybe you have information on the 8 shot GP-100 you would like to share with us, I guess the relevance to anything I said is for him to decide .....NOT YOU!! You should maybe find something better to do with your time than nit pick what people say on these forums. At least try to be constructive and positive. BTW the model numbers are nunya! Or was that a rhetorical question?
Let him decide the relevance of all the the information he gleens from His post... Sheesh grow up!

I have the 607, same gun, but only 7 shots. I have put thousands of full magnum loads through it, mostly reloads. It is as tight as when it was new, no evidence of flame cutting, and the bluing has held up really well too. I use it to introduce shooting centerfires to beginners, because the recoil is so light.

Had one for years (late 90s) and put thousands of rounds through it with no problems.

You mean like this?

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses.. and weregunner, thanks for all the great links!
I didn't know this model has been around as long as it has.
Anyway, probably pick one up this weekend.:)

I bought one used a few years back with a custom leather shoulder holster and pachmayr grips for $350. The recoil is ridiculously light, and it hit what I aimed at. I'm an average marksman and I split 1" thick road flares (some duds) consistently from around 75 feet. Maybe that is only average, but I was impressed. The ports are a pain in the ass to clean, but not impossible. I sold mine a while back when money was tight and can't wait to get another one. It's fun to shoot and gets the "holy ****, that's a hand cannon" reaction from most people that see it.

Some people are down on Taurus' guns and I'm not sure why, especially their revolvers. I own and old 66 with a 4" barrel and it has never given me a problem, and I find it to be a pretty damn accurate piece as well. As others have posted, most people that own a Taurus wheelgun would recommend them. I do.
