Any Winchester/Browning 1895 owners here?

In the interest of safety, Winchester has fitted a tang safety to the Model 95 and modified the lockwork to feature a rebounding hammer.
naturally, they had to screw it up... ah, lawyers.

Forget the M1A, I just might have to get one of these first!

I've allways liked the 1895, and there is just no arguing with .405 hornady:D

I have a Browning 1895 in .30-06. Nice rifle. Pain in the neck to load the mag, though. Almost impossible not to get hurt in the process.
Why? I assume you have to load the mag in place, right? How is it different from more modern rifle mag designs? Sharp edges?

I'm not at all familiar with the process and I've never actually seen or handled one of these rifles... kindly enlighten those of us who aren't as fortunate.:)

Well, you load it from the top by positioning the cartridge over the follower and pushing down, but it's not like you just drop it in prep for pushing it down, because you have to position it correctly first. Then in pushing it down you almost invariably get your thumb nail caught on the lip of the magazine. This will start to hurt after about five or six times. It's not a very ergonomic loading mechanism. Other than that it is very accurate and smooth functioning. I could be there is a method that is less problematic for loading that I just don't know about. Anybody?

Had a 1895 Carbine in 30-40 Krag. What a hoot to shoot! Short, light, handy and a sweet shooter. Dad now has it because I really needed a large safe but had no funds for it. So we traded. I will inherit it some day though. Wish Browning had them in .308.

Swampwolf,
I'm an only child, and I posess infinite patience. Besides, the old man lets me take just about anything I want from the gunsafe. In fact, he calls me and asks if I want to shoot work-up loads in stuff, to keep his arthritis from acting up. He won't let me take the high grade 1895, or the high grade 1886 out, though. someday:evil:

That's pretty creepy. :uhoh:

I have an orginal in 30-40 buidlt in 1926 which was my father's. I wears a Lyman Model 21 peep sight. To load it I first push down with the rim of the round then as I slid it to the back of the magazine I lower the bullet down. No pain involved at all. It sure is a sweet shooter. I have a target that put three rounds touching at 100 yards. No I can't do it everytime but I did this once. I'm sure everybody has one of this type of target where everything went right just once from a rifle that you wouldn't expect it from.

Hawkeye- relax bud, it's all in good humor.

Swampwolf- Dad is one of the greatest men I've ever met. (I can be biased in that opinion, but others would certainly agree). In his retirement, he suffers from bad arthritis, plus degenerative disk disease, so he doesn't shoot as much as he used to, and has cut way down on his heavy caliber shooting, but still loves his classic rifles. He complains that his groups have opened up over the years, and he still whoops me at the bench!
