I'm looking for a starting point for 308 win, with 115gr handcast lead round nose. No gas check. Looking for something in the 1500 to 1600 fps range. I have IMR 4227, H110, and Varget.

Nothing doing for those powders, bullet is too light. All i could come up with is for a 113 gr. bullet using 10 gr. red dot @ 1623 fps. Or 11 gr. green dot @ 1692 fps. Or 12 gr. Unique @ 1831 fps. All starting suggestions fired from a 26" barrel. Like Thomas said, pistol/shotgun powders.

No reason that you can't shoot that bullet.... But the powders you listed are not suitable for use with it .... Powders like Red dot, 700x, Green dot, Unique & Herco will work well...

The light bullet you are wanting to load, won't work with the powders you mentioned. You could load them with 47.5gr IMR-3031 = 3350fps, or 45.5 gr IMR-4064 =3235 . Both are pretty quick loads. I shoot a Savage 110, Hog Hunter, 1-10 twist, and have had some good luck with these IMR Powders. My experience with these 2 powders, the 3031 will use about 4-5% less than 4064 and get the same velocity.

Good Luck in your quest

You should buy an appropriate powder, something you can also use with handgun loads you already load for. I'm also guessing you can use H4895 which will deliver reduced loads in the .308 and you can also use it for full power normal loads.
