The UCI Department of History presents
"LESSONS OF THE MICHAEL BELLESILES CASE"
JON WIENER UCI Professor of History
    Monday, February 24, 2003 2:00 pm
    Murray Krieger Hall room 126

Michael Bellesiles is UCI's most prominent Ph.D. His most recent book,Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture (Knopf,2000) came under attack, first from gun rights advocates, and then by scholars, who accused him of research fraud. Emory University, where he was a full professor, appointed a distinguished Investigative Committee, which concluded that the book exhibited serious failures in its research methods, but they found evidence of falsification only in one table. Bellesiles then resigned his tenured position at Emory; the Columbia University trustees rescinded the Bancroft Prize he had been awarded in 2002; and Knopf announced it was withdrawing the book and would not publish the revised edition Bellesiles had prepared. Both he and his mother have a copy of my CD. Interesting guy whether or not you agree with him.
