Anyone bought a handgun in CA this year yet?

I know it's only been 3 days, but was wondering
if anyone has gone through the new license and
testing process to buy a handgun?

I'll be doing the paperwork on a S&W 360 on Monday.
I think I know what to expect regarding the new laws,
and I hope the FFL does as well.

One guy I know with an FFL says there is no more written test;
another guy at a local gunshop says there IS a written test

I am sure we can all pass the test(if there is one) and the "safety demo"....like you, I want to hear from someone who has gone through the new procedure!

Here's what we do in North Dakota. Walk in, see an overprice 360 that you like. Say, "I'll take it". They wrap it up and five minutes later you're gone.

In the Prk to buy a Handgun now you need to have an HSC card 30 questions its pretty easy,also a copy of a utility bill and give a Thumbprint.:banghead:

I picked up the HSC book today. I would say that its a really good book for newbies getting in the the buying a gun game. Sample Questions were like:

The safety on a Semiautomatic is not always fool proof T or F
The magazine is part of the : A. SA revolver B. DA revolver C.sermiauto pistol D. SA and DA revolver

pretty basic and easy stuff. I would say most of the forum members here could pass the HSC test no problem.

Even has a section in it were they show you how to safely operate a semi-auto and SA or DA revolver.

Nice pictures. Worth keeping around for newbies to read before you take them shooting.

I took the test on Dec. 27. 30 questions,common sense stuff.
Theres a pamphlet/book to read before the test.Passing
score is 75%. $25.00
The next day,did a person to person transfer. $31.00
I can pick up the gun on Tuesday,but will wait till the weekend,
its about a 45 minute drive(on the weekend,no traffic).
I'll have to do a safety check with the gun,its a S&W 66,
so it shouldn't be problem.
I just printed some copies of the DOJ affidavit for the used safe
I just bought today $350.00
I just spent more than I paid for the gun!!!
Man,this is getting expensive!!

I just submitted the paperwork for my first handgun purchase under the new 2003 laws.

The test to get the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) was 30 multiple-choice questions, administered and scored by the FFL. No time limit. You are allowed to miss 7. I finished the test in less than 5 minutes and scored 100%. No one here will have any problems with it. There is a booklet you can read beforehand, but I didn’t bother. It’s all very basic stuff. Read all the answers, though. They try to (very mildly) trick you on a few. The dealer fills out the HSC (it’s a wallet-sized piece of paper) and you and he sign it. Cost was $25 + tax and is good for 5 years.

The DROS submission procedure is the same. Dealer enters your info on the computer using your HSC id number instead of the old BFSC id. The make/model of the gun must show up on the pull-down menu (as before). Cost was the same - $20. Also filled out the federal 4473 - same as before.

I brought a utility bill with my address on it, but the dealer didn’t ask for it. I’m assuming proof of residency, the fingerprint and the “safe handling†test will be done when I go back in 10 days to pick up the gun. I thought the residency check would be done up front but I didn’t want to rock the boat and ask too many questions.

So far, piece of cake. But, I won’t know for sure until the gun in safely in my possession and I’m walking out the door. Will update in 10 days.

If I received a doj certified safe for xmas as a gift, how do I prove to them that I have it so that they don't charge me for the safety device.

Regarding the safe, if you don't have a receipt,
I believe you can sign an affidavit
stating that you own one. I think you
have to provide the make and model number.

Yep you dont need to show your receipt for your safe the dealer will just have you fill out the safe affidavit form simple. Life in the PRK.:banghead:

Just re-read my post and thought I'd make it clear that as screwed-up as this State is,the safe is not a requirement.(yet)
I bought it so I wouldn't have to keep buying safety locks,
as well as security.
The affidavit is available on the DOJ website.I printed some up and will take it with me when I pick-up my new toy!
