Anyone else buy the ammo before the gun?

When I'm on the fence about trying to justify a new gun purchase to either myself or the missus, if its a caliber I don't own, I seem to have adopted a tactic of buying the ammo first. If I do this, it seems to ensure the purchase is made sooner rather than later :) Sort of keeps me focused, ya know. Anyone else ever done this or has other similar traits?

I was given some .410 and used that as justifictation for getting one. I've been stocking up on .22 magnum for some time now as I know I'm gonna get one sooner or later.

you need all of it for a functioning unit. i've never given much thought to the order of buying stuff. just start picking stuff up to make it happen. sometimes the rifle is first, sometimes dies or brass or bullets or scope...

The closest I have ever been is my most recent purchse of a .32 ACP pistol and had purchased the ammunition before my FFL had received the pistol.

I've bought both the gun and ammo at the same time when it was a caliber I didn't own. I no longer buy new pistol calibers. I stay with the old standbys.

I once bought a box of 45 LC in anticipation of a lever action rifle that was to be sold by a cousin's coworker. The deal fell through, and I was able to sell the ammo to another friend who hd several guns in that caliber. To this day, I've never bought anything in 45 LC. Not because I don't like it, I just never found a gun I wanted in it. My dad bought me 150 rounds of 9mm this past christmas, and didn't realize that I don't own a 9mm. My wife said I shoud sell it all to a friend, but I say I just need a new 9mm now! My dad told me "I thought all you police officers carry those goofy plastic 9mms." I told him it is a goofy plastic .40 S&W caliber instead.

Nah I buy my guns partly based on the ammo. For example my next pistol is probably going to be a 9mm and my next rifle a 5.45 because ammo is so cheap.

I bought dies, and brass back in November for a gun that I bought around New Years, to build a rifle in the caliber that I wanted and am going to pick up next weekend May 8, 2010.

Savage 110 originally in 30-06, but now in 338-06 :D

Oh and slicksleeve, I have never found a .45 LC that I liked either but I do have some .45 LC ammo, it shoots just fine in my .454!

The old man gave me a box of .308 win. Later that decided for me whether to get the .308 or the .30-06 barrel for my break action. I was so happy to have a chamber for all the ammo types I had in the house. I felt so out of balance before.

Sure, when there's a 10-day waiting period in one's state, the tendency is to buy some ammo and other accessories while one is waiting. As for buying ammo well ahead of time, yes, I've done things like this occasionally (e.g. I bought some DVDs before I had a DVD player and likewise for Blu-ray because I had to wait for specific players to be released). Living in California :barf:, I'm definitely going to do this with any specific ammo for future gun purchases that I can only find online if that stupid new law actually goes into effect. :cuss:

Was given a bunch of 7mm Mag brass. Figured I would never buy a magnum so I offered it for sale or trade on the classified's board. No takers, but someone posted a set of 7mm Mag dies for a good price so I bought them. A few days later a fellow offered a Remington 7mm Magnum for a very good price so the circle was almost complete. Now all I need to do is win a raffle for an Elk Hunt and I'll be set.

Not so much ammo but before I was old enough to buy a gun, I started buying the accessories for them. I knew you couldn't buy a gun or ammo through the mail, but you could buy just about everything else with a postal money order, and have it shipped to your home. So I started with buying those zinc alloy replica model guns, then moved on to pistol magazines, holsters, gunsmithing tools, ammo pouches, web gear; even a bayonet for an M-16. I gave a lot business to surplus places like Sherwood and Nordac, and all this years before I could legally buy a gun.

I found a good deal on .38 Super ammo just before things went nuts with the Obama election and I'd been debating getting a 1911 in .38 Super or a upper for my EAA witness, so I stocked up on the ammo. Even got reloading dies, but still haven't got the .38 Super pistol yet. Eventually.

Many years ago I inherited a bunch of .44Mag ammo so I ended up eventually getting a used Rossi saddle ring lever action carbine, S&W 626, and Desert Eagle to shoot up the ammo.

don't know how it goes in other places, but in TN, a minor (me) can own any legal firearm, IF an adult pays and gets it and gives it to the minor OFF OF THE PROPERTY OF THE GUNSTORE, as a GIFT. Then it's legal, how I got my Mossy 500 tactical and my Mosin :D :D :D :D

I got rid of my last .40 a year ago, but I reload .40 because the brass is everywhere at the range and I already reload for 10mm which makes it easy.
If I ever get back on board the .40 wagon I won't have a problem shooting it.

p.s. - before anyone says anything about primers, I reload 9mm and 380 already too, so the primers are always on hand.

I ordered ammo online the night before I went to the gun store to buy my SKS. Does that count? When I bought my M1 carbine at the CMP I had a gun without ammo for about 6 months.

I'll often pick up 9mm or .380 ACP when I see it in stores or the local gun shops. And even though I have more than few 9mm and .380 handguns at the moment, there's always a good possibility that more of the same will come into the fold. That being the case, I'm buying the ammo before I'm buying the gun, which only makes sense. You can never have too much ammo, after all. :)

I have no desire or need for firearms in any caliber/gauge I don't already own. So I always have the ammo first before the purchase of a new gun.

Does that count?

I have dies and 100 rounds of .300 Weatherby brass that's been sitting in the shop for thirty years for a custom Mauser that I never quite got around to building...
