Anyone else having trouble finding .45ACP?

Seems as though the supply had dried up here in Central Ohio. Only seems to be .45 though, there's still tons of 9mm and .40 around. Vance's and Buckeye usually have stacks of Blazer and WWB at the register, but they've had none for 2 weeks now. All the ranges are down to either the dirty crud ammo, or expensive rounds like the Federals. Wally World and Meijer are both out all as well. I've got a few boxed of WWB left, but I'm running out of plinkers quick! What's the deal?
 
Make it yourself (cost me about $4.50 to make 50). Better ammo and you won't have to worry about the local beer and ammo store runnin' out.
 
I recently had real issues getting components for reloading .45 Colt of all things. Midway was out as well as two of the larger local shops. There's plenty now, though.

There's plenty of .45ACP around here but it may well be old stock. I noticed that Federal Red Box .45ACP ball is now priced identically to top-end .40 S&W rounds. This may have always been the case and I just didn't notice. Seems odd though.

reload it yourself...... i'm thinking i'll never run out of ammo as long as i can keep getting primers and powder....... i also have means to cast bullets and plenty of lead to do so........ i'm thinkin 50 rounds cost right between $2-$3......... and it's fun besides!!

I think with the weather turning nice due to change of seasons, folks are buying up ammunition , and components.
Some are getting ready for the "shooting season".

Examples:
Buying Locally -
I went with someone to pick up 1500 rds of 45ACP recently.
We also picked up 4k rounds of 9mm and 20 bricks of .22.
Oh, Every Brennke' 12 bore 2 3/4 " slug in stock too...

Friend of mine who shops at Wal-Mart, has twice this month bought every box of 45ACP WWB they had.
Along with every box of 28 gauge target loads.

On Order
Another person has 15k bullets plus Primer, Powder and the like.
45ACP brass, - I forget exactly, I want to say 5K, maybe it was 10k
Case of shotgun slugs, Two cases of 9x23, .38spl, .357 and since the brown truck driver is going to have a aching back and bent two wheeler, .44 magnum.
"I got a bare spot that needs un-baring..."

32 gauge shotguns shells are r-e-a-l darn tough to find locally though ;)

I think you should rephrase the question to anybody finding affordable .45acp ammunition?

The stuff is out there but it is getting pretty expensive even at wholesale.
 
While I was picking up my 870 Tactical at the shop I work at, one of the counter guys was trying to order .45ACP from one of the major distributor. (The one that shares it's acronym with a hit TV cop show) Couldn't get ANYTHING. He was frantically trying to come up with SOMEONe who had .45ACP that the boss would order from. (There are some people he won't do business with. ) Glad I reload.
 
Natchez has .45 ACP at $11.99/box of CCI Blazer Brass, and $12.49/box for Federal American Eagle.

They had the Blazer Brass on sale for $10.99/box up until a week or so ago -- I picked up 500 rounds when it was on sale.

The situation in DC is causing a lot of people to buy far more than they normally would to stock up
And with some military units using the .45 more, they're getting more of it first.

I could be mistaken on the last, but I do believe it to be a factor.
 
After loading ALL my own stuff (except for concealed-carry factory rounds) for several decades, I simply cannot visualize going to a store and paying the prices they get for loaded ammunition, be it surplus stuff or not. I don't remember the last time I bought a round of rifle ammunition, barring the impatience that hit me when I bought a new Whitworth .223 last year and had no loading dies on hand...I HAD to shoot it, y'know?

I have about 6,000 loaded rounds of .45ACP alone out in my shed, and there are about twenty other calibers out there to keep the .45 stuff company. The 'makings' are also there for at least fifty thousand more rounds. I cast all my own handgun bullets, and the vast majority of my rifle ammo is loaded likewise. Only my hunting ammunition uses good premium-quality jacketed bullets.

It's not hard to find space to reload. I've done it on a rudimentary bench in a 4' closet, and it worked just fine. I even have a van set up for reloading and shooting now; talk about luxury for a shooter!

I sure hope y'all are saving all that expensive brass from the factory ammo...?
 
I reload and have plenty of .45 components, but I recently bought a new pistol and wanted to test it with a couple of hundred rounds of factory ammo. I did have trouble finding it, and I had to settle for off-brand stuff I'd never heard of. It wasn't that the WWB or federal AE was too expensive, it just wasn't available.
 
Who said anything about .45s being banned in California? As far as I know, there's nothing on the radar about anything like that.

Even if they were banned, why would .45s be banned and 9mm not be?

Buy and shoot what you will...it's your money, your shooting time, and your fun. :D
 
Must be something local then, I guess. I've been looking at doing reloading, but the G/F is not happy about the garage space situation as it is, and I'm going to be further into the doghouse once she finds out there is another car project on the way.....kind of unfair since she is the one who gets the interior space anyway.
 
When I see these "is XXX caliber drying up" threads, I always chuckle and pat myself on the back for my good sense in being a reloader for over 20 years (about the only thing I ever get to pat myself on the back for :))

My collection includes 28 different calibers and I reload for 19 of them. For high utilization calibers like .45 Auto, I always keep around 1000 loaded and have another 2-3K of components ready to go.

Nope...no problem finding it at all...
