Whenever I identify a need ... e.g. CCW, field pistol, CQB rifle, ... the list goes on ...

I then do all sorts of research and testing to discover the 'best' thing that fulfills that need (and this quest is generally insane bc. there is normally no 'best' solution).

Next, I will set up the whole 'system' with redundancies ... e.g. two (or more) pistols, holsters for every contingency (shoulder, IWB, OWB, as is applicable for the 'need'). Lights, scopes, slings, gun cases (if applicable) ....

So I have 3 fairly identical p226's (only one is a mk25 though ... OCD calling ...) with 3 fairly identical p229's ... (only one M11A1 tho ... stop that you darn OCD!). Essentially 2 (or more) of everything I own. That goes through rifles and shotguns, knives, even clothing.

But at least I'm having fun with my insanity :)

Does anyone else do this ?

I have 2 P226's.
One is the all steel frame and one is aluminum alloy frame.

I have 2 AR's in the same config: one for me, one for Wife (although they have different triggers)

that's pretty much where the duplicates stop.

Sometimes I wish I had OCD, my shop might stay cleaner.
I had a good friend that had OCD. If he bought a gun, he would buy holster, mag pouch, belt, extra mags (5), and everything had to be in its place. He would come over to my house to learn stock repair and restoration. At first my mess seemed to bother him, but after he saw that I knew where everything was he seemed more at ease.

If by cleaner you mean had a lot more stuff in it, then yes :what:

I know someone that likes to buy two of most everything: one to use, the other to be stored in pristine condition as part of his "Collection". I can't afford that kind of OCD or that duplication of effort. I may take my own sweet time checking things out, trying different guns to see what I like or dislike but eventually I find something I like and I go with it. This is pretty much across the board too; be it range toy, target pistol, CCW, or just a plain fun gun. Spare mags, accessories, and holsters come later after I have had a chance to put a gun through it's paces and find the right ammo for it.

I know a guy who bought two of each new gun of interest, one to shoot, one to keep pristine to "turn a dollar on." (Although he has never been known to sell a gun.)
Even the guns he shoots get replacement barrels so the original does not wear.

If you truly suffered from severe OCD you would have put a "?" after the title. I, like you, over research new purchases. That is part of the fun of gun ownership. Unlike you, however, I have one gun per "niche". I see no benefit in duplicates except to waste money and distract me. And besides, big reason here, I don't have the $$$$.

I do things in threes.

3x M1903 Springfield's (Lo#, Hi#, Mk1)
3x M1 Carbines (Inland, Winchester, Universal)
3x S&W revolvers (19, 28, 686)
3x S&W autos (39, 645, 6904)
3x Walther's (M4, PP, P1)
3xARs (Del-ton, 2x Anderson)
3x .22 rifles (All Marlin- M70, 80e, 81dl)
3x Rugers (Mini 14, Security 6, MK1)
3 Savages (2x M99, M1907)
3 7.62x39 rifles (AK, 2x SKS)

Seems to me two isn't enough of anything you like and four is usually too many....:)

I’ve bought on impulse and well laid planning, both work for me.

The only thing that I could see being and issue(OCD) is if one does extensive research makes the purchase and that gun doesn’t scratch the itch so they start the process all over again.

I’ve never been blessed with a huge gun budget so that affliction hasn’t been my issue.

Yes :alien: OCD here also. I have to have a second of every keeper gun I own.
My OCD only applies to certain things. I have to have paper stacked in a perfect pile without any edges sticking out. Cans and jars in cabinets need to have the labels perfectly printed forward
My work bench and reloading bench do not cause my OCD any problems. They both look like Katrina ran across them

Besides the fact that I have four almost identical 870 TB,TC trap guns I also believe the condition should be referred to as CDO, in proper alphabetical order.

Yep I think I have CDO as well but I have firearms and reloading supplies/equipment in three different locations (all 3 sets are pretty much identical:p). But then I think that the theory falls apart when I look at the reloading room in my primary house. It has been called "the trash heap" by some close friends that come over to reload with me on occasion even though I can find everything in short order. I admire Gunny for cleaning up his reloading room and sharing the process with us but I plan on keeping mine as it is. Too much trouble for me to relearn where everything is moved to again I fear.:D

Today a similar compulsion had me putting all of my guns into a spreadsheet, with way more details than are needed in a "if my guns are stolen" list. It also has a lot of links to information about each.

Todays addition was a "short List" of what I am looking for. That should help keep me from impulse purchases. I also made a sheet for accessories, with links to the gun they are on.

Then there is a fourth sheet of guns I am interested in; but not enough to put them on my shortlist.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right.
The way I heard it was, "anything worth doing is worth overdoing."

Is this OCD or just "covering the bases"? o_O
