I love to hear some of the other stories from guys i go hunting with and since this year i might not be able to go i was hoping some of you had some good ones. I have one buddy who got a buck last year here in nm and it had bb's all in the front quarters. Looks like someone shot it with a shotgun. potchers:barf: Another buddy who has seen bigfoot here in nm. Hunting in the gila.
Please feel free to post some good ones and maybe i can tell them next year if i get to go. Or i can share them with some of the guys from work. ufo stories welcomed as well. Thanks

Never seen a Bigfoot, although my cousin is likely a distant relative. Strangest occurrence was when I "missed" a mule deer one time. Deer disappeared immediately & when I went down to check, it was laying on its side in the bottom of a dry wash. As I walked around it, I could see no indication of a bullet entrance/exit wound & no sign of blood. Until I grabbed the rack & discovered that the skull was shattered (and blood had drained into the sand under the carcass), I was starting to think the critter had succumbed to heart failure. The round had entered squarely into the ear canal & exited through the lower jaw on the other side. Would have been a remarkable shot had my scope not been "off" & I had not been aiming behind the front shoulder. Partner's bride pulled an almost identical shot a couple weeks later.

A few of my friends and I went deer hunting in Dennysville Maine 7 or 8 years ago, and spent the better part of the morning scouting for good spots. As we sat down in preparation for lunch, we heard a little wrestling noise in the bushes right behind us. I figured it was a small bird or rabbit, but as the four of us turned to look, a massive bull moose stood up less than 15 feet away from us!!!

None of us were lucky enough to hit the "moose lottery", so all we could do was stare in awe as he looked at us for a minute or two. It seemed like forever, as there was no where to go if this 1000+ pound behemoth charged at us. Finally, I guess after determining we posed no threat to him, he turned his massive head and went on his way.

Nobody said anything for a few minutes, then Jeff said "damn, I wish I got a permit!" We laughed and went about our meal.

I guy I knew one time told about being on a hunt out west, Arizona, or NM, someplace where there was lots of cliffs and such. He and sevreal others had a camp set up, and he had to go do #2. So he took the lantern and went off a ways and squatted down to do his business. Suddenly there was a roar of laughter from the camp. He figured someone told a good joke. They kept laughing and laughing, and he was wishing he could know what was going on. About that time, he looked up and there on the face of a big cliff was a giant shadow of himself made by the lantern sitting beside him. Though it was in shadow, they could see everything that was going on--and coming out! :D

i remember a year we were hunting outside a small town in ND. and we hadn't seen a single deer all day. so we parked our truck for lunch on the side of the road, and my dad decided he was going to go walk this slew next to the truck. Now this slew was only about 10x10' in size, real tiny.it was also only about 15 feet from the truck. so he walks out there and out squirts about 10 deer. Sandwhiches were flying all over the place as we were reaching for our rifles.

I have many other good stories but it would take forever to tell them all.

Several years ago before I knew better I had my rifle in a loose pickup gun rack bouncing down a dirt road. The gun fell off and landed on the scope. figured I would pull over and shoot a few rocks to make sure the zero was still OK. Leaned across the hood and shot. Did not see the round hit, but it sure sounded funny. Shot again and saw where it hit, close enough for brush hunting. It was late season so I took a doe. Got back home and noticed I had shot through the hood and out the quarter panel missing everything in the engine compartment.

Leaned across the hood and shot. Did not see the round hit
Make sure that vehicle is level when you use the hood for a rest to sight in, and remember that barrel is 1 1/2" or so under the scopes line of sight. I parked in very uneven spot once to sight in a 223 I had. put a old hard pillow on the hood rested the gun on the pillow and fired 2 rounds at a 100 yards. Walked out and no holes in the target. When I got back to the pickup I noticed a very shallow copper colored crease across the high side fender where the bullet had just barely touched. I had leaned against the lower side to shoot. Got lucky could of been much worse. Lessons learned.

My first season hunting I was set up in a blind right underneath a hickory tree. Natural fodder and all. Well it was a nice and crisp morning and my level of tension was high as...well it was my first season out. I was monitoring my shooting lane seeing if any deer were about...you know the drill. All of a sudden there were two screaming fighting squirrels at my feet that had dropped out of the tree in their fighting. Man was that weird.

Time for my bear story!

I was out dove hunting at Elephant Mountain WMA in west Texas early October a couple of years ago. They'd a good monsoon that year that lasted well into early September- the tumbleweeds were thicker and taller (some 7'!) than I had seen in years. I had to cross Calamity Creek with my little Blazer and it was flashing pretty good.

I had just let a good barrage go at a couple of birds (my dove hunting method is to try to scare them to death with semiauto fire). All of a sudden something big, furry and black takes off from about 50 yards to my left, headed south in a hurry. I didn't realize it was a bear until it was long gone. I didn't have any slugs or buckshot for the 16 gauge I was using and you can't have them on WMA land in Texas anyway. I did have a single action .45 with "cowboy action" loads in it, but rules say I had to carry it concealed, and if the bear had the mind to he could have had me ate up and excreted before I got to the gun, the way I had to carry it.

I had known that black bear were coming back into the Big Bend area for years, but I never expected to see one that far from the river and that close to Alpine. I probably should have reported it to Texas Parks & Wildlife.

empty handed and swimmy headed

one cold morning i climed into one of our shooting houses on a powerline. i say cold because of the temp outside and the feeling of running 102 fever(didnt tell my dad). given the fact i was running such a high temp, i was a little dizzy the whole morning. but i tried to shake it off and soon i had a nice doe in my scope. i fired and the deer ran off, but i had a bad feeling about it. after two more attempts at hitting deer that crossed the plot, i gave up and searched without success to find a single blood spot, hair or any other sign that i had hit one of them. however i did find a gash in a power pole next to one of my targets.

My dad always does this too, deer hunting in ND. I always thought it was a waste until I saw something similar.

Funny how those old farts know the tricks :)

It's not hunting, but it's fishing... Went deep sea fishing with my dad when I was 17 off the coast of Mexico. We were out for about 3 hours with a couple other guys and a lady. The water was pretty choppy, we had 4 lines out and not a single bite. The lady started getting sick over the side of the boat :barf: and we were all starting to get pretty pale as well. I guess the upchuck did the trick, because we started getting bites immediately thereafter. I caught a 110 lb, 8 foot marlin. Shoulda known we were using the wrong bait to begin with...

my friend in wyoming was hunting antelope and he came up while they were in progress of mateing with one another and he shot the one on top and dropped it he said the female just tunred around and was like ***

My friend and I were duck hunting one weekend when a huge propane tank at the power plant that they were constructing down the road blew up. The fireball was huge, and we could feel the shockwave hit us. It was by far the craziest thing I've seen in the duck blind.

Was deer hunting some years back. Saw a nice 8 point buck and several does, aimed and fired and was positive I drilled the buck. Does went everywhere, and the buck dissappeared. I heard the bullet strike and knew the shot was good.

I waited a few minutes then went to take a look. Laying dead in the tall grass was a spike buck! ***! Noticed some blood just a few feet away on the ground. Was a blood trail of major proportions. Found my 8 point about eighty yards away. My 165gr .30-06 slug had blown right through the big deer, leaving a gaping exit wound, and a small chunk of bullet core had peirced the smaller deer killing him in his tracks I guess!

I had to report the deal to the game warden because I only had a buck tag. Once he got the story straight and believed me, he had me go buy a doe tag and wrote me a note so I didn't get busted. Got two bucks with one shot!

I had thought it strange that the deer that took the brunt of the shot ran 80 yards, while the one that got a spent hunk of lead the size of a BB died on the spot! I honestly hadn't seen the other little buck, must have been directly behind the 8 point when I shot.

A few years back I was walking back to camp for lunch. About 1/2 mile from camp I came across a blood trail about a mile from my stand. I decided to go eat and get help tracking the blood trail. We followed it and about 10 feet from my stand in a corn field we kicked up a wounded 7 pointer. He was not moving fast and I was able to get a shot when he ran through a opening. Never did figure out where he came from no one in our party fired a shot that morning and he went by 2 stands to get to mine.

One year I had went into town to get my cousin

It was the first time he had been to our now favorite deer camp.

About half way in from the highway, J asked why we had moved to the new site?

Well I pointed out the window, while saying just before the season we moved our camp over here, we would see a nice buck right there when we where driving in to quail hunt.

When I turned my head to look at were I was pointing, I was pointing at two doe's, the first deer wa had seen that year.

I was hunting in blue earth county Minnesota and walking across a snow covered field and seeing nothing kept walking slowly ,when all of a sudden from under the snow, a foot in front of me a big old buck blasted straight up out of the snow in my face and snorted loudly, it shocked me so much i never got a shot off ...................................................................................................................................... then there was the time i was huntig deer and walking through a standing corn field and was wishing i could see better because the corn was to high. Then i felt a bump with my feet and stood on it and could see alot better, I looked down to see what i was standing on and it was a dead deer, it freaked me out because i was expecting to be on a mound of dirt.:what:

Brooklyn squirrel story

Once "missed " a squirrel so bad that I got him with a .22 rifle! Could see his head from the eye back (tree trunk in way). Tried to shoot his eyes out but must have pulled the shot a bit. Broke both legs on the side I WASN'T shooting at. Hit tree first(just barely!) that caused the bullet to deflect and hit the squirrel anyway. In bowling when you strike on a left side headpin hit it's called a "Brooklyn" strike. So I guess that makes this a "Brooklyn" squirrel! Then there was a time when I killed a mink and a rabbit with 1 shot and didn't know the mink was there but thats another story!

Sleepy Head

Last year I was calling moose on the ledge of a mountain while my hunting partner was on top watching. After 45 minutes I heard the sound of a moose walking on the rock on top of the mountain, and it was heading our way. Peaking up on the ledge a small cow moose walked right by me heading towards my buddy, I bend down while it walked by me. Then as I crawled up on top to see what my buddy was doing I saw the cow standing about 15 yards from my buddy laying on a big rock sleeping it off. I wanted to show him the moose so I tried calling him not too loudly. Finally, while the cow was still standing there he woke up, jumped and grabbed his gun while the cow took off, and I helling at him not to shoot because it was a cow and we only had a bull tag! Too bad this wasn't a small bull I could've dropped that moose only 15 yards away from him! I will not let him forget this little fiasco for quite a few years to come

I had a Texan come up to hunt the high country here in CO. He couldn't cut it with the Altitude and all so he just kind of hung around camp. He also didn't have a gun that worked, a Jacket that was adequate, he only brought leather cowboy boots and jeans. And he brought a two wheel drive pick up with street tires.

So he was wearing my Jacket my insulated coveralls using my rifle wearing my spare pac boots driving my truck.

He was supposed to pick us up at dark at prearranged spot. he didn't show.

Turns out he had shot a giant bull elk a couple of miles down the road from camp while driving into town to get more cigarettes.

Of course he did it from the window of my truck, using my rifle, wearing my cloths from the hard surface of a state highway.

And he didn't get caught. And I couldn't turn him in because they would have confiscated all my stuff.:D

The 260 yard "retrieval" almost killed him. especially at night by himself.;)

I was shooting coconuts at a range one day with my M44 and when we were getting done I saw part of what I thought was a coconut husk. I lined up the shoot and when I pulled the trigger I saw a pink mist instead of a white goop. I went out to see what I shot and found the back half of a rat about ten yards down range. Rats don't like mil surp calibers.

Forty years ago, central Illinois used to be prime pheasant hunting. Late one season, we were hunting a piece of ground that had a depression that was a couple of acres in size. As we approached and topped the rim of the depression, pheasant started flushing wild out of the bottom and off of the sides. I have no way of knowing how many but it was dozens - both cocks and hens. There were three of us and after the commotion stopped we walked into the area and we all limited out and flushed many more birds both hens and cocks that we couldn't shoot at. I have never seen anything like that in my life before or since.

One other time, we had a sudden cold snap move through and we were hunting grass waterways. I happened to look down and saw a hen pheasant frozen to the grass; I pulled her free of the grass and she flew out of my hands.

Here in Ohio, several sightings of Sasquatch have been reported in Coshocton county. I have never seen Sasquatch, don't ever expect to, and have no idea whether such a thing exists or not. I do know people who know people who claim to have spotted him and lets just say my BS meter is more than pegged.

I have spent the last 30 min trying to find the pics to back this story but i have been unable to locate them.

Me and a couple of friends decided to go camping 2 summers ago. At about 11 the first night we decided to run into town to grab a few things. On our way there we spotted a young deer laying (alive with its head up) in the ditch. As we passed, it never moved. We turned around to check it out. After getting out of the truck and walking up to it we noticed that it had been hit by a car. Other than a compound fracture to a front leg, it didnt appear to be badly injured. We decided to go on into town and check on the button buck our return trip.

On our way back to camp (about 2 hrs later) we again stop to check on the deer. He was still alive and sitting up in the ditch. He still never tried to get away. None of us had any type of gun with us, which is VERY unusual, so we couldnt put him down. One of us come up with the idea to load him up and bring him back to camp. Well,,,,,,,we did. I was in the bed of the truck holding on to the deer. He still never tried to get away or cause any fuss at all.

So we start driving to camp again. We didnt make but about 150yds down the road and 4 more deer run outta the ditch in front of us. We were only going about 20 mph. one of the 4 deer found the front bumper, got knocked off all 4s and slide the rest of the way across the road, hits the other ditch, and takes off running never to be seen again.

We get back to camp, unload the buck and the rest of our stuff. We look at the badly broken lower front leg. About an inch of bone is missing and the lower portion is haging on by nothing more then tendon. The only thing that we can think to do is cut off the lower leg and put some kinda bandage on it. So thats what we did.

That little button Buck stayed in our camp for about 2 more hrs. We would walk around camp, go up and pet him and he would nothing more than just look around. After about 2 hrs I walked over to him and as I was petting him, he stood up and casually bounced off to about 20 yrds away, turned around and just looked at us for about 10-15 min. before bouncing off into the night.

My friends went back down there about 2 wks later and stayed for a week. They spotted him several times that week and many more times through out the next year. Unfortunatly we lost that lease this last summer when the land was sold.
