i'll be out there again this season. Since 2000 the vast majority of my deer and wild hogs were killed using muzzleloaders. In 2013 Fort Sill made the first week of muzzleloader season conventional muzzleloaders only; using conicals or round balls. Began doing some hunting with side lock muzzleloaders.

The mark of a hunter is is sneaking up and putting a round ball into the critter: Llke Grand Pa used to do. .

I’ll be using the Pedersoli for squirrels and such.

This year I’m going to give the in-line .32 a try on rabbits(first fall I’ll have had it).

I only hunt with black powder. Mostly flintlock. Deer, rabbit, squirrel, upland birds (caplock SxS) , and groundhogs
I haven't done waterfowl yet, but I do have an 11 gauge musket...

The Missouri ML season has evolved into what is called “Alternative Methods”; from front loaders only to now centerfire pistols (to now even technically including AR “pistols”). So the sanctity of ML deer hunting has been bastardized into other approaches (for the good of all I guess). The ongoing upside of this season is that this hunting population is only about 10% of the “big” center fire rifle season - still remains relatively quiet and uncrowded - I remain loyal to using a ML.

I'll be using my Traditions inline 50cal. Nothing special, 250gr Shockwave and 100gr of Pyrodex P.
I'm not really a true BP enthusiast, it's just an extra two weeks to get more deer for me. As soon as regular gun season opens, the muzzle loader gets cleaned and put away.

If its rainy or im short on time, I will use my scoped slug gun, otherwise it will be me .54 Hawken or even my .45 flintlock..

My biggest buck was taken with my old Hawken.

One of these days when/if I'm only feeding me and my wife, we might be able to get by on one or two deer a year. If that happens, I might like to play around with flintlocks, maybe even matchlocks. But for the foreseeable future, I barely have time to get the deer I need from bow hunting, gun season, and the two weeks we get in between for muzzle loader season.

Now that sounds like a challenge to me! I've hit running tree rats many times with trusty old 12ga,20ga, and even .410. I think I could probably do it with my inline, but I can't imagine pulling it off with a flintlock or a matchlock!

How much trouble is it to manage a bp shotgun in the field? That is the one thing I don't own in percussion.

Very easy. No trouble.

My Pedersoli 10ga percussion will definitely be in the field.
I picked up a Howard Hill Halfbreed longbow that is begging to make meat. I have some really nice modern gear that may not see the light of day this season.

I was thinking of using my sharps 45/70 with black powder cartridges but do not really know if it qualifies as black powder because of the primers. Anyway was just thinking of it as a way to prolong the hunting season.

I'm pretty sure it has to load from the muzzle to be legal. Check you game and fish dept.

No need to check. The rifle must "load from the muzzle". As far as ignition, scopes, sabots, caliber and types of powder...check your game and fish dept. !

I'm down in the bootheel area,and pretty much have the woods to myself during alternative season.
MDC...IMHO....need overhauled from top to bottom. And the hog situation....the state is a joke.

I hunt squirrel with my .50 cal. Great Plains Hunter. I load 30 grains of 3F Goex under the usual RB. It's a thru and thru in the head or neck. The RB doesn't expand.
Then in deer hunting the 50 cal. Great Plains Hunter makes for a good back up gun. Loaded with a Hornady 240 grain sabot and shooting duplex load of 5 grains of Goex and 75 grains of Pyrodex I can shoot dead on at 75 yards. The gun is set up with a Lyman target peep and front hooded site.

If my back heals well enough through the Fall, I will be looking for pheasant and ruffed grouse. I will be carrying a 16 gauge New England fowler.

i'll hunt with this Navy Arms rifle. The barrel was recently bored out and rifled to .54 caliber by Mr. Hoyt, an outstanding gunsmith. Distance is 50 yards. The small holes were previously made by a not so accurate .22 magnum.



After firing two sighting in shots i fired the four shot group.



Aiming point was six o'clock on the red bullseye. The group is about 3.5" too high: The rear sight is at it's lowest limit. Now i must make a new higher front sight.
