First off, I say "actual" because I now occording to the letter of the law most of us are in the militia right now.

I am refering to the volunteer, unfunder groups the organize, train, compete and are called into service by stare and local government to assist with things such as disasters, man hunts, etc.

The group most local to me lists the following as objectives;

Teach observation skills - help you be more aware of your surroundings so that a dangerous situation can be avoided
Teach personal defense - NEODF will show you how to appropriately react to a hazardous situation by conducting classes on personal self-defense, pistol training, SWAT training, etc...
Survival skills - whether trying to survive an extended power outage...or trying to survive in the outdoors - NEODF can help you know how to get out of the situation by offering classes and training on rappelling, first-aid, NBC training and MUCH more..
Provide empowerment.. When you and your family know what to do and how to respond to disasters and emergencies - you become stronger and more confident through your ability to withstand WHATEVER the world throws at you...

Sounds good enough to me. I'm already very well trained in fire/EMS/rescue/HAZ-MAT and outdoors and survival from my Boy Scout days.
I would like to be involved in some training where I could shoot and learn with like minded people and possibly dabble in some "tactical" skills.

I'm just worried that the "militia" is as bad as most people think it is. Seems like an idea thaw would easily be executed poorly. If anyone has some personal experiance or opinions I would like to hear them.

Thanks,

If you join any group that has the word "militia" in it's name and the government finds out about it, the next time you fly on a commercial airline you will notice that your screening will be much more time-consuming than most other peoples'. Because you will forever be on "The List". SSSS :eek:

I am aware of several groups of individuals in my area calling themselves "Militia".

Given my desire to live a pain-free life, I have chosen to keep my own preparations my own and not throw in my lot with them. Considering how Militias could be targeted as "domestic terrorists", I'm thinking we'll see a decline in membership as folks' desire NOT to be targeted by the might of the US government for the sake of political gain manifests itself.

But hey, that's just my opinion. I know folks in both groups; They seem nice enough and have their hearts in the right place. Oh sure, both groups have some screwballs in them, and it seems that it's the screwballs that get the media attention...but by and large, I see nothing wrong with their attitude: Improvise, Overcome, Adapt.

Hmmm...who else follows that philosophy?

Some Militias in other states actually have put out films such as this one:

(No, it's not a rickroll. I just don't know how to embed video here)

While it has a few amateurish touches, the concept is sound, and it appears as though some serious thought on "budget" logistics has been made.

This could be helpful to preparation enthusiasts, whether or not members of a Militia.

Just sharing.

Try this.

Hey There;
At one point in time years ago, I was somewhat involed with one. But !!!!!
You may have noticed where I live. That gave the "M" word a very bad name.

Not only that. At that point in time None of the regular members of the "M" could agree on much of anything. There was all sorts involved. Once I found out the Motives of "most" involved, I had to back out.

I too thought that it would be a good thing to have a group that was concerned enough to get that involved with the system and try to maintian and protect all aspects of our way of life. That (sadly) is not what I found.
Most , wanted things like the speed limits done away with, pot legalized, etc.

Some went as far as to make Hit list. This is and was wrong. The particular group that I knew was a bunch of wacked out chicken ***&^*s anyway.
All of their so called skills training was a bunch of crap. 95% of them could not or would not even compete in a simple game of Paint ball. What the heck would they have done had in ever come down to real guns with real ammo being fired at them ? I will not say how involved I was but will say the most could not shoot well enough to save their own life let alone mine. I would even dare say that maybe 2% of them could be trusted. The rest were not to be.
In a SHTF ordeal I would want to know that my back was covered. It would not have been then.

So for now me and my own are ready and stay that way. Have been for many years . But I refuse to live looking over my shoulder.
It would also be a very bad day for the ones that came here to give me and mine a problem.

None of this is advice toward you. Just my take from the past and present.
Good luck in what ever you decide to do.

Looks OK.

Hey again;
After seeing the web page all looks cool.

You saw my thoughts earlier. If that is not what you run into , you may have found something worth being ivolved with.

Good luck.

Wildfire post will give you a general idea of militas.

While I was stationed at Ft.Campbell a guy in my unit invited me to check out a local "milita" organization. Most were over-weight, middle-aged, delusional, wanna-be's who claimed Vietman MAC-V/SOG petigries. Apparently every other guy was Special Forces who did "wet work" for the CIA, but didn't understand acryonimes like MOS, ETS, DEROS, or DD214.

They also ranted on and on about Russian troops being trained and massing at Ft. Hood for the UN takeover. They even showed me pictures of "Russian" tanks on railroad cars being sent across the country for the invasion. The evil UN/commie tanks were M113s and Sheridan tanks.(I was anti-tank, trust me I know armor.)

Other milita people I had talked or listened to at gunshows always seem to try to sell you something. Be it their "milita community" land deals or official milita manuals, usually photo copies of army TMs and FMs.

No, it would be better for you to just be prepared by yourself and maybe a couple of close friends who can keep their mouths shut.

Look up your local state defense force. Colorado has one who's mission is to assist local authorities during disasters, missing persons, and ultimately to defend Colorado from invasion (their words not mine). I was surprised to learn most states have them.

Not every state has a State Defense Force, State Guard or the equivalent. For contact with those existing official organizations, search using your favorite search engine. There has been a state defense force association extant in the past- its web links seem not to be working currently. ( http://www.sgaus.org ). The various SG/SDF organizations are state sanctioned and usually under the command of the state Adjutant General's Office or the equivalent.

Associate with any other unsanctioned organizations at your own risk...
