anyone know anything about browning BARs?

I'm looking at one in .338, but I don't know anything about brownings.

I'm mainly interested in reliability/accuracy. Also, being a semi-auto, can you still use any kind of ammo in it, specifically the 250/300gr ammo from doubletap?

I don't have any need for a .338 whatsoever, but I don't have any rifle more powerful than a .30-06 or 8mm mauser, and I want one.

They are quality rifles although IMO bolt actions are more accurate. You MUST keep them clean for them to function properly. They are magazine fed so any ammo will feed although some very low power rounds may cause problems
 
I worked for a Browning full line dealer for a number of years. All of their rifles are quality, but I was never impressed with the larger chamberings in the BAR. It's not a very accurate gun IMO, and as groundhog34 mentioned it must be kept clean to function properly. I would take a fairly heavy bolt action in .338 over a BAR anyday. BTW, I owned a BAR in .300 Win. Mag. that would never shoot less than 4.5" at 100 yards. It was sold shortly after spending a month trying to work-up a load that would improve on this.

I've shot one in .270 and its a nice gun accuracy was decent as far as I could tell as I only shot it a few times

I'd also look at the benelli R1 if your set on an autoloader but like the other guys said, I'd prefer a bolt when your getting that big.
 
Sold my .300 BAR because it was so inaccurate. Tried a variety of loads and never got a good group. It was reliable, and very nice to look at, but...........
