I have a customer who wants a Springfield-Armory scope because it was "made for my M1A". Problem is, they no longer make them.

Does anyone know of where I might find one, but more likely do you know anything similar that I can find in current production? I know there are some ACOGs with .308 reticles, but this guy is going to want a convention type scope.

Also, which M1A mount is the best. I think he wants some steel, not aluminum. Back when I had a scope on my M1A I think I remember hearing about a mount made by Smith or someone which was the best, but real high dollar. I eventually realized a bolt gun is good for scoping and my M1A was just fine with iron sights, but to each their own.

Thanks for the help.

A Smith Enterprise, Inc. mount and scope rings combined with a Leupold MK4 scope is probably your best over all package.

Another scope mounting system that might be an acceptable cheaper alternative is the ARMS line.

If you go to SWFA and backtrack two links from this page, the entire ARMS product menu will be displayed. Their mounts and rings are very rugged, but the rings absolutely need lapping. I've never heard a complaint about the strength and zero of the ARMS system, but some guys who've mounted scopes in their rings without lapping have galled their scopes.

Springfield Armory's scopes were pretty inconsistent in quality. I'd choose a good Burris Black Diamond or Leupold Mk4, too.

Remember, this isn't about doing what would be best, it is about a guy who has in his head he needs to scope his M1A and he wants the "scope designed for it".

So I need something with the range finding reticles in it. He didn't sound like the MOA calculating type.

This is the exact set-up he is looking for. It's the Springfield second generation mount and Springfield second generation scope, 4-14x56. It has a ranging reticle out to 1000 yrds. calibrated for 168 gr. bullets with internal level. The reticle changes with the power setting so it always shows true values. Yes the mount is aluminium. And yes I have heard things like it comes loose. That's because it wasn't tightened correctly. Just cause it has "thumb" screws doesn't mean you tighten it with your fingers. This set-up is a matched outfit. The scope and mount were over $750 12 years ago. The rings are from Enterprise Inc. in California.
Don't kid yourselves about this not being a capable set-up. As you can see from the target pic it IS deadly accurate. And it will ring a 18 in. long x 12 in. wide gong at 600 yrds. virtually everytime I yank the trigger.
I didn't realize the scope is no longer available. My research tells me it was made by Nikon.

That's what I have pictured above

burris, they use a proprietary setup , called the direct plex reticle, which is fabulous, and you can get it setup with all types of diff lenses, for diff cart usage.
