I'm looking for a variable mag scope with at least 14X on the high side for a varmint rifle. These scopes seem to be moderately priced but want a first hand recommendation before I buy. Thanks

BTW: I feel silly posting a retraction but in a previous post I referred to my Nikon scope as being Balvar. I was handling my rifles the other day and looked at the scope on my Rem. 700AS .270 and was astonished to see the scope was a Bausch&Lomb Balvar 2.5x-10x.
It's been a great scope with very good optics and has maintained zero for years. I guess our brains play tricks on us as we get older. This was one of those instances. I'm sure most on the board realized my error immediately but just considered the source.

The glass wasn't too great in the examples I have looked through. You might want to compare one to a Weaver V16.I have heard that Pentax has a good warranty.

It depends on what model you're looking at. Pentax has put their name on some good scopes, and on some standard, low-budget Chinese stuff.

Many of the Pentax scopes are or were made on the Burris assembly lines, or so I am told. The lightseekers are excellent but fairly expensive. I have 2 4.5x14x42 AO Pioneers scopes and really like them. I think they compare well to the V16 Weaver, which I also have. And even the cheap Chinese Gameseeker 4x12x40 ($69 at Sportsman's Guide) are decent scopes. I actually like them allot. The Pioneer would fill your needs probably but I think they are discontiuned. I have not checked the Pentax website lately.

I have their spotting scope. I'm not sure if they put the same attention into their rifle scopes and cost the same, but the Pentax spotting scopes get the approval of birdwatchers, and they're more picky than shooters.

I have two Pentax Gameseeker 3x9x40MM. I like them well enough that I just bought a Pentax ultimate zoom 3x15x50mm for my varmit/taget rifle.

I have a Game seeker also, and I am pleased with it they seem to be a excellent value to me. Its bright and clear with a bdc reticle and has been trouble free in the 6 month Ive had it.
