Appleseed recommendation

I'm going to try to attend my first appleseed shoot in the next month or two & I am interested in people's opinions for which rifle to bring?

The range we're shooting at will be 25 yards.

I have a 10/22 that is pretty customized with a heavy bbl, laminated thumbhole stock, & scope. I feel like this would be the best choice based on everything I've read about the shoots, especially the number of rounds fired, but it is a heavy gun with no sling.

My other option is a Mini14 .223. It does have a sling & i can shoot it with or without the scope, but it's a .223.

I don't think my .308 bolt would be appropriate for a 25 yard range.

Using a sling as a shooting aid is a large part of the training, so I'd either get one for the 10/22 or bring the mini-14.

As an Appleseed shoot boss, I definitely recommend a sling. It would not be hard at all to put some sling studs and swivels on that Ruger... you will be glad you did. It is a very easy DIY job... if you can run a power drill and put screws into holes, you can do it. You will like that rifle much better with a sling on it after the Appleseed, trust me. Just remember to get 1 1/4" sling swivels, so you can use a GI web sling (M-1 or M-14 issue). That kind of sling will help, because you can use all the sling techniques that will be taught. Plus they are very inexpensive (the Appleseed Store has them for $12).

You will also want at least one extra mag for the Appleseed course of fire. There are stages on the Army Qualification Test that involve a forced mag change under significant time pressure. Have fun!

Your 10/22 is the quintessential AQT gun, once you put a sling on it.

As mentioned - bring 5 mags.
Bring 4 mags if you don't have 5.
Bring 2 at a minimum. But really, bring 5 mags.

Definitely the 10/22. Not only will it be much cheaper to shoot but you will be better able to concentrate on your shooting. Definitely put a sling on it. How big is your scope? I prefer to use iron sights but a mid-magnification scope will work fine. You just don't wanna show up with a 24x on it. I wouldn't run anything at a setting higher than 4x.

In addition to the sling, know how to actually use the sling to steady your rifle. And how to put it up on your arm. It makes all the difference in the world.
I'm not trying to split hairs here, but I believe it is 25 meters, 6 feet farther.

I agree it's a good idea to learn to use the sling and practice before you go. Lots of folks use the web sling but a good leather 1907 is also an option. It's what I use.
