Does anyone know of a good reputable online appraiser for antique weapons? I have a cannon that I want to get appraised, or at least get further information on. I cant find anyone in my area an was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

reputable online appraiser for antique weapons

I don't see how those go together since no reputable appraiser would give an accurate appraisal without seeing a weapon in the "flesh" and online "appraisers" by their very nature aren't going to be able to do that.

Antique cannon Superstore offers appraisals for $50 if good pictures are provided but I cant find any independent ratings for them. They also claim to provide a certificate of authenticity.

I live in East TN for what its worth.

call the tortuga trading guy in vegas that used to be the antiques gun guy for pawn stars.

i heard hes in discussions for his own show.

here's a good place to start, look for a guy that goes by the name cannonmn on greybeard outdoors, deals in a lot of antique cannon. Not mentioning any names but there have been many problems with online cannon dealers and consignment places, do research before giving out any money. I've been a member there for years and the same names come up fairly regularly as problems.

I've heard that guy say all kinds of asinine things. I would not be going to him for an appraisal.

He had his own show, although the name escapes me. It made through one season, but I don't think it is going to continue. A THR member was one of the four appraisers on the show.

Where is the OP located? There are antique weapons appraisers all over the country. Might be easier to suggest one if we knew where to look.

This is the only pic I have on my phone, im away for the wsekend.

A friend of mine is Jim Davis who owns and operates:
Northfield Gun & Tackle
34 W Aurora Rd
Northfield, OH 44067
(330) 468-0676
Hours:
Tue-Fri 10 am - 6 pm
Sat 10 am - 5 pm

Jim is a cannon enthusiast and seems every time I wander in the shop there is another cannon or two, including some pretty nice ones. Anyway, you may want to give him a call, nothing to lose anyway. :)

Look at the muzzle of your cannon, if you see a liner in it that will be a clue that it's probably not antique. Hern Ironworks and several others make modern reproductions of black powder cannon and most will have a steel liner. The picture is of a rifled liner but the idea is the same.

This one appers to have a crown but not a liner. The cannon is solid cast iron and it even appears that the barrel is possibly from the casting becuase it is pitted and does not have rifling.

Also, the tooling marks on the cannon dont appear to be from modern power tools. It is possible its a reproductiom but there doesnt seem to be anything modern about it.
