April Mail in Match for Fellow THR Members

Hey I had a question about the total score. Should we make that a grand total or should we average it? Nevermind since we can always shoot open class and most of us shouldn't have an excuse not to shoot in every match. I was just thinking that those people that don't have a gun to shoot for a particular match would be hurt quite a bit in the overall. Then again there is no prize that goes along with this so who really cares? But if no one cared why are we keeping score? :uhoh:

oh darn,,,

now i'm gonna have to blow off a bunch of rounds outta the bushmaster and get all practiced up. :D

hey, i'm not seeing any scoring rings on the target, how are we supposed to score it, or do i have a glitch?

Simple. Count the hits and the "X"s. The best possible score is 20 - 20X. (and I bet I know someone who will come close).
It ain't me.

Ok, next question, even though it won't get answered until after I am done shooting.

Is a Remington 700 VS in .308 with a scope considered a scoped military rifle? I know that the Remington 700 action is used as a precision weapon in many services. Not necessarily my exact configuration. By the same means, can I shoot my Ruger 10/22 as a scoped military rifle since the Israelis use a suppressed version for their military use? The "Any scoped military rifle" catagory doesn't specify if it is a "Non-current" or can be a "Improved" class of weapon. That is why I think there should be 5 catagories. Scoped Stock and a Scoped Improved class. That isn't entirely fair if I am using a Scoped Improved vs. a Scoped Stock is it? From the .22 LR shoot, I found out that it really doesn't matter, but still it is the theory of it all.

I guess I might print up a few more targets and shoot a variety of guns and decide what I am going to submit.

I guess if you look hard enough you can find almost every rifle has been used by somebody in the military somewhere. I would love if someone shot with a .50 BMG if they would make a vidio for the web. :) :) HINT. At 50yds it would tear the paper apart.
Just remember this is for fun and don't make ROTR sorry for setting things up.

I consider a military rifle to be one with military markings on it, not a new rifle based on some caliber or action used somewhere sometime by some Army. If you have an Israeli-marked Ruger 10/22, go ahead and shoot in the stock or scoped class. A 10/22 from Wally World is in the Open class. Stock means "as issued" to troops. Improved means a military rifle improved from "as issued" or it's in current use like an AR15/M16. Scoped means scoped MILITARY rifle. Open means anything else.

If you have an M1903A4, M1D, M21, M24, M40A1 or another military-issued sniper rifle, or if you've added a scope to your 1917 Eddystone, it's in the scoped category. If you have a Remington 700 VS with a scope, it's in the open category. I suppose some military somewhere may have issued scoped rifles without a trigger job or some improvements, but I don't think it warrants a new class.

I guess I should change the rules to: "If you shoot at a target, submit it for scoring." Character means doing the right thing even when nobody's looking.

As far as the .50 BMG goes, I'd love to see a target come back with only Saddam's beret left:D .

I don't have time to go into details this morning, but it doesn't matter what class I am in. That was a tough SOB to hit. I got him, but not a whole lot of times. Very challenging month. And of course my best score wasn't with a scoped rifle, not my 10/22 or my Rem 700. It wasn't my M1A or my M1 Garand. Any guesses what my best score was shot with? And the score wasn't too impressive either. Darn that guy and his RPG!

At this time the only recomendation I have is if you submit multiple targets, your highest score should go to the monthly tally. If not, I am screwed. Just limit the submitions to one per class, no entering the open class if you have any of the other classes. Then to encourage shooting more than one gun, the highest score should go to the monthly total. Otherwise people are only going to shoot their race guns.

Talk more later after church. Happy Easter and thanks again ROTR for putting this on.

Nice try El Rojo. You must be in sales.:)

This month is difficult, but I'm hoping that it's difficult for all. Remember -- no benches, sitting, kneeling or other kind of rest -- this is offhand.

The LOWEST score entered by each person is carried forward. We will use the curve that Bedlamite developed to make each month count the same.

Does anyone know how to calculate how the size of this little guy (3.5" tall at 50 yards) compares to a full-sized Saddam? Is it like shooting at a full-sized Saddam at 1000 yards? (discounting the difference in trajectory at 50 ***** vs. 1000 yards of course). I put it together figuring it really wasn't much different than shooting a soda can at 50 yards.

Live and learn. I want to keep these fun for all and not impossible. Please supply feedback like EL Rojo!

The little bugger is on one knee, so full height doesn't help. top of his head to his crotch is 3", compared to about 40" for the average man, so he is about 1/13th scale, or about equivilant to 650-700 yards away.

Dang if that at 50yds is same as real at 650yds I will have to get closer or (cheat) in real life. (which I plan to do) I.E. if threat at over 50yds I will use support (tree/stick/ground/etc) as brace.

Bedlamite -- You 'da Man as always. Good call!

I was thinking of doing this one as it should be done - one knee, sitting, prone...but I thought we'd start with offhand since that is usually part of the High Power course of fire. I would like to do this one again in the future in a more supported position (and after I get my AR15).

I second the someday having some sort of support. I still hate that bastard. Are you sure you want to take lowest score? My other targets are probably going to get burned away in the house fire sometime today if that is still the case. I still get to have my integrity if I burn down my house right? Or is it just as bad that I set my house on fire to destroy the 4-2x low score I shot with my M1A as it is to just say I didn't shoot it?

El Rojo -- I'll tell you what. I was thinking of doing this anyway. I will a QUANTITY category in the Mail in Match. Each month from now on, I will better define how many entries with different guns each shooter is allowed - based on the kind of weapons featured. We will track the shooter who enters the most legal targets. Persistence pays.

I really don't have a problem with NOT sending a target in (you don't have to burn down your house). I DO have a problem with shooting a course of fire multiple times with the same weapon to try for a better score.

Yea, I'd agree with that. This one would be fun to do again later shooting prone. If you really did have a shot at this guy or Your Momma Bin Laden, do you really think you'd shoot it standing? I'd be on my belly, with a sling or shooing off a rock, vehicle or something.

No complaints though. I'll get out there and do it.

I don't know if we necessarily need a "who has the most guns" contest. I simply request that your best score goes to the grand finale total. It is a positive bi-product of having more than one gun to shoot. Simply limit your entries to one target per class. Shoot each gun only once. Shoot as many guns as you want as long as you shoot each gun at one target, and one target only. So for example. Lets see how many guns I have to shoot in this one.

Stock: 12

Improved: 2

Scoped: 0

Open: 7

Ok, so I have a total of 21 firearms I could have shot in this match if we don't count handguns and shotguns. However, since I have firearms that fit into one of the three military surplus catagories, I should be prohibited from entering the open class. So now I have a choice of 14 rifles I can shoot in the Stock and Improved class. I should be allowed to submit two targets. One for the Stock class and one for the Improved class. I should be allowed to shoot 1 target for each of my 12 stock rifles, but I may only submit one and I can only print out one target for each rifle. The same would apply for the Improved class, I print two targets, I shoot one gun for one target. As far as my final score that goes into the grand tally, I don't agree that it should be the lowest of the stock and improved score. At the least it should be an average of the two. I would argue that since you took the time to shoot two classes, you should be rewarded by being to use the highest of the two or three submitted scores for your grand tally.

If we are trying to discourage people from printing out multiple targets for a single firearm, it is impossible and I think it misses the point of the match. If people are going to cheat, there is really nothing we can do about it other than having a notary watch the match and sign the document too or having two THR members present to sign off the targets. I don't have to print out mulitple targets to practice. I simply take a cut in half manila folder and place a 3/4" target paster in the middle of it. That 3/4" target paster is about the size of your bulls eye and the half a manila folder is about the size of the 8.5"x11" target. The tighter I get the group, the better. Once I think I am ready, I shoot the real target. And that is it. If I botch it, I botch it. As you will see by my scores this month, I didn't do all that great and if I were going to cheat, I would probably try to get at least a 17 or 18!!! There is nothing we can do about cheaters other than look for powder burns on their paper. If they take the time out of their day to cheat and send it in, they know that their win is empty and a sad, sad commentary on the state of their existence. Lets not let their miserable excuse for breathing ruin our day!

Again, thanks a millon ROTR. What a great thing this is even if I am mad at myself for not hitting that bastard RPG man more. And by the way, I shot my best score with the good old Schmidt Ruben K-31. If you don't have a K-31 yet, please go buy one now. Quit wasting your time on all other projects until you get a K-31. :D

Well I finally got out to shoot mine.

And I learned something today. I have really been neglecting my off hand shooting. I'm sending it in anyway, but you guys at the top have nothing to worry about. At least no one can accuse me of cheating. But it was a great day to be out at the range and that's all that really matters.:D

It's been real busy at the Vaughn house this month. I hope I can get the time and appropriate weather to get in 20 rounds before the month ends. I've got a target printed and ready to go though.

Well I shot it. Not very happy with my results. Did it with AR-15 sling and heavy barrel. 9 out of 20 hits and only one X. :(
Of the "hits" only 5-6 would slow/stop him.
Then I took the SKS. UFTA I had 2 POOR hits out of 20. I made the mistake of putting a old laptop below target to destroy the hard drive. It shredded the target about 6" above and one foot back. I was not happy with it anyway. Thing is I KNOW the SKS is capable of much better then that. Couple were not even on paper just cut the top.
For real fun I ran to target and back, grabbed the AR and fired 20 rds into used sks target. No great surprise only on poor hit. Looked like shotgun. I have to claim the one hit as luck.

Actually I noticed the "Unaided" after I shot. So I wrote in "Sling used" and pointed at unaided. I guess when I printed it off I was thinking no prone/kneeling, rests/bench/etc. It is not a fancy sling just a 1.5" black "tactical" sling. :) With no sling I doubt I would have gotten 2 hits.
BTW is it legal to shoot 4 and check target and shoot another 4 etc? I can't see where I am hitting at 50yds. So I shot 4 saw I needed to go left 3" did them and dead center. :) Then was high for next group and all over.
Actually under Improved wouldn't a sling and 16" heavy barrel fit? I didn't mark stock as it is not. Here ROTR tried to make it easy and we find these little grey areas. :) :) I will send it in and he can mark/file it in which ever area he feels is correct.

Wish I'd used a spotter betwen shots

I actually had a really good group, but it was about 2 inches high and 2 inches right of target. Was using a new batch of Yugo 7.64X54 that I've never used before. Seemed dead on when I sighted in, so I'm not sure what happened. Oh well, eagerly awaiting May's match so I can redeem myself.
