Which brands of 30-round AR-15 magazine are recommended and which ones are to be avoided?
 
Anything Milspec will be fine, all aftermarket commercial mags are crap. There are a few exceptions but if you stay with Milspec mags you will be fine.
 
I've heard that the Magpul PMAG is quite nice. I understand the early ones had a few issues but that's all cleared up. They are polymer and pretty tough (with the youtube video of them being run over and all that).
 
USGI, MAG PUL, C Products, and British SA80 mags are good.

Anything that that you find at a show or internet that does not have a name stamped on it or made by USA mags are good ones to avoid.

Many internet stores have customer reviews on the bottom of the product screen and are handy at times.
 
Go to 44mag.com and pick some up there. They have sales occassionally. I was able to pick up D&H 30 round mags for my AR for under $10 a piece.
 
I generally like milspec with magpul followers--but not old worn out surplus ones. Lots of folks like the magpul mags in general.

And for the "newest thing" in AR mags you might investigate the "Easy mag"--I've no hands on experience, but they have an awesome marketing video where they fill 'em with sand, shoot 'em with shotguns, run 'em over, etc and they still go like mad. But, they may just be gimicky--I'd like to hear some actual users on those before I sank money into them.

Some ARs are finicky as well--my oly has a very tight magwell, not everything fits up in there.

Broad statement, that.

If true there would be no market for commercial mags since there is seldom a significant price difference from USGI mags.

Personally, the Magpul PMAGS are much easier to load and seem much more durable than the aluminum milspec mag that came with my AR.
 
I bought some mags from CMMG with their coated stainless follower, they seem good, I go pick up my first AR in a few minutes so I don't know how well they work yet!
 
What about the AR-Stoner mags on sale right now at Midway for 10 bucks? I was going to pick up a few on sale.
 
Ditto on the PMAGS, and they have a dust cover that snaps in place on a loaded mag and takes the pressure off of the feed lips
 
I've owned a dozen C Products stainless steel mags for about 2 years. They've been to many practical rifle matches and a rifle class. Doing this they have been filled with mud and dust with no failures.

I've also seen PMags that have performed very well. Once they have been out for a full year I expect to be buying a couple of dozen for long term storage.

Remember, USGI is another way of saying 'low bidder'. Some of the USGI mags have been pretty crappy. Also .gov issues mag as an expendable item, as USGI aluminum mags do have bad durability during hard use.

i have used with great succes bushmasters brand which i don't know who makes em for em though, brownells mags, usgi mags, okay, colt (the 20rds are my favorite 20rd mags out there) colt 30 rd mags. and others i can remember right off the top of my head. the pmags are nice and i will be buying some of them.

i say stay away from orlite mags.

good mags can be had for $10 a iece much cheaper than most quality mags and they are everywhere and yes that is the price for new mags, and even the improved pmags are only about $14 a piece not bad at all.
 
Pmags are OK...but most of mine are NHMTG.
Also have a few Double Star mags that have worked fine.

Just make sure you get the green GI followers...others may work but those are better.
 
D&H,labelle,Colt,okay are the ones I use. Stick to USGI . bravocompanyusa, 44mag have good deals on 20/30rd USGI mags. I have yet to try Pmags.. might have to purchase one and see for myself about all the hype.
 
I bought some USA mags for my mini14, they are better targets than they are magazines. On the plus side, if you throw them just right you can get them to skip across a pond six or seven times
 
I'm stocking up on P-Mags. For under $15/per I don't see how you can go wrong seeing as most are saying they are as good/superior to the best surplus type stuff.
